Robert Gianniny Obituary

Gianniny, Robert V.

Brighton: February 16, 2014. Bob was born July 9, 1924 in Irondequoit. He was raised there and after his graduation from Irondequoit High School he joined the US Army. He was shipped to the Pacific Theater where he served in Guadalcanal, Bougainville and Philippines where he was wounded in the invasion of Cebu Island. He graduated from Syracuse University and Albany Law School and practiced law in Rochester in the firm of Middleton, Gianniny and Boylan, which later became Boylan Brown. Upon retirement from the law, he joined his sons in the real estate development business, developing, among others, Linden Oaks Office Park. Bob served on several boards of nonprofits. For many years he was on the board of the Memorial Art Gallery serving as president. He also spent many years on the boards of Albany Law School and Genesee Country Village and Museum. Others included Compeer, The Landmark Society and the Rochester Area Community Foundation.

Bob leaves his wife of 64 years, Joanne, his son, Bruce (Dana) Gianniny, his son, Mark (Cynthia) Gianniny, and his daughter, Gayle (Bob) Stiles; grandchildren, Mark Jr, (Maggie) Gianniny, Amanda Gianniny, Lauren(Brad) Boyer, Blake Gianniny, Sarah (Guillaume) de la Villarmois, Allison Stiles, Max Gianniny, Carolyn Stiles, Joanne Stiles, Jack Gianniny and Danny Gianniny, and great grandchildren, Mark Gianniny III, Charlotte Gianniny and Henry Boyer. He was a loving grandfather, known as Pooh who instituted Pooh school of business and economics for his grandchildren and served as magician at many birthday parties. His family considered him to be a Renaissance man, creating lovely sculpture, paintings, jewelry and rose gardens. His friends will remember his competitive nature in golf, backgammon and, well,…. just about anything. We will miss his warmth, his wonderful story telling, and his ability to see the humor in many situations.

A Memorial Service will be held Saturday, 11 AM at First Baptist Church of Rochester, 175 Allens Creek Rd. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to The Memorial Art Gallery, 500 University Ave., Rochester, NY 14626, www.mag.rochester.edu and Genesee Country Village and Museum, 1410 Flint Hill Rd., Mumford, NY 14511, www.gcv.org. Joanne and family: Ralph extends his sympathies remembering the wonderful times he spent working with you both on so many carpentry projects not the least "the little house" and enjoying that great bottle of wine at the end of the day. I was glad to meet Bob a few years ago when Ralph and my brother Mark worked on the little house again, share some stories of family, business, travel and wine. We have moved to Florida from cold NY but will always miss the warmth of your home. Ralph and Cheryl

I had the good fortune of seeing Bob at the many parties hosted by the Stiles family. We had some great conversations and I certainly will miss seeing him. I know how much he enjoyed being with his family and how much he was loved. My thoughts are with his family and I will remember fondly my time with him.

Joanne and family: Words cannot begin to tell you of my appreciation for your Bob. He was always the giver and I cannot recall Bob ever asking for anything in return. From all of the Giannini's of Virginia, thank you, Bob. All of us truly appreciate your generosity in publishing our heritage. But most of all you will be remembered for sharing your love of family with all of us. May God Bless and be with your immediate family. With our deepest sympathy, Bob and Pat Giannini and family in Philadelphia.

Bob was a friend and mentor since my arrival in Rochester. His strong leadership and generous support of the Memorial Art Gallery set a very high standard. His professional legacy and personal friendship will not be forgotten.

Joanne and family,

Sorrow is hard to express but this is a favorite in times like these:

Death leaves a heartache no one can heal, love leaves a memory no one can steal. ~From a headstone in Ireland.

My thoughts are with you.
