As I have read all the beautiful messages to you tonight, I have been filled with thoughts of so many years ago and what love there was surrounding the Cavanaugh family. I shall never forget the day Exeter played a junior team early in the season and scouts for all the 24 nhl teams set up cameras and made the rink a spectacle. They were there because several players other than Tommy were being watched for high round draft picks. The cameras and commotion made my own unflappable son (Nate, Yale hockey 06) nervous (and he wasn't on the list either), and later in the day I called and asked how the game went. He said Tommy scored 6 goals and nobody else came close. Such stuff are legends made of.

Tom was as great of a hockey player and teammate as he was a person. I had the honor of playing with him at Harvard and looked up to him as a leader and mentor. Off the ice, he was as kind and selfless as anyone I've ever met. My prayers go out to Tom and his family.

There are no words to adequately express the loss you are feeling - the pain is too deep. I think of David telling me at a time of great loss that the God we know is not a hunter but rather a gatherer. He was right! Some of my fondest memories of growing up in Heritage Park was with Tommy and the rest of the Cavanagh family. I will also always remember playing tennis together for a couple of summers.
