Rochester: Passed suddenly, September 14, 2012, at age 61. Predeceased by his parents, James R. & Victoria A. Rathbun. He is survived by his brother, James; sister, Mary Kay (Tim) Turney; nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many good friends. Tom was a devoted and talented designer, musician and producer.

Family will receive friends 3-7 PM Saturday at New Comer Funeral Home, 2636 Ridgeway Ave., followed by a Celebration of Tom's life at 7 PM. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Diabetes Association. To share a memory, please visit:

My dear, sweet cousin, Thom. The Lord took you too soon from us. I will miss you so very much. . . . enjoyed our weekend breakfasts at Uncle Danny's or East Ridge Family restaurants, our walks near the zoo and railroad tracks, our phone conversations, sometimes from another state where you were working. But most of all, I will miss your kind, gentle, witty, and intelligent demeanor, and our talks. You were the brother I never had. I will always remember you with great fondness. I have known Thom for 14yrs. Not only was he a wonderful & protective neighbor he was a good friend as well. I will miss our talks and of course his music playing outside of the window... So many memories. On behalf of myself and my boyfriend Logan (who has grown close to Thom these past few years) Our deepest condolences to everyone in the Rathbun family. You are in our prayers. My wonderful Tommy, the baby that I would lovingly watch and take care of....that loving and curios boy turned, into such a fine and gentle kind soul. How my heart aches at the thought of losing you, but strong in my faith that you are in the loving arms of your Father & Mother. I will miss your sweet smile, your genuine warm spirit and the laughter that we have shared. My thoughts and prayers are with the family and all of those whose lives you have touched through out your life. God speed my sweet Tommy, until we are all together again, you will remain in my heart & prayers.

I worked closely with Thom for many years at Xerox and I enjoyed his music and even had one of his CD's. Thom had an easy comfortable way about him along with many talents and I consodered him to be an exceptional Designer.It was a privilage to have known him and to have shared time with him.Since leaving Xerox many years back I had lost contact with him but the memories he leaves with me will last throughout my life. I will miss him and wish him peace & happiness in the hearafter. Save a place at the big Drafting Board in the hevens for me Thom.

I met Thom in 1976 and was honored to play in a band with him for some time. Along with Tom Kunz, Elviage Taylor, Rick Latone and myself, we experienced many hours of fun and entertainment. That is when we became close friends. Thom was not only a talented artist and mechanical designer, but a very intelligent and kind person. He was very easy going, and never lost his temper. Being with Thom was calm and relaxing. While he was at Xerox, my wife Carolyn and I saw quite a bit of him. She always enjoyed his company and found him to be a gentle and caring person. He watched our kids grow. They liked him, as well, and called him "Computer Thom" because of his knowledge of computers. Thom was a good man. An honest and loyal friend, and we will miss him very much. Finally, although we will miss him, we know that Heaven has welcomed a new keyboard man. God Bless you, Thom!!

Tom and I hadn't seen each other or spoken for many years. But when my father died I got a phone call from him offering me his condolences and words of kindness about my father, with whom he had a professional relationship. Those words and his calm demeanor helped to soften the pain I was feeling. Thanks Tom, and say hi to Dad for me !!!!!
