Bruce Neal Flory
July 1, 1947 - April 20, 2024
PORTLAND - Bruce was born in Portsmouth, Va. July 1, 1947. His father was a Captain in the Navy, therefore the family relocated often. He attended Randolph Macon Military Academy in Virginia for high school. After high school, he proudly served in the US Marine Corps and remained stateside for his military service. Bruce attended Cal State LA, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in Education. He met his wife of 49 years in Los Angeles, Ca. They were married June 26, 1975. They spent a year in the Peace Corps teaching English as a second language in Pohnpei, Micronesia. On their return, Bruce was hired by the Sweet Home School District in Oregon, where he taught grade school until his retirement.
Bruce, a beloved family man, was known for his easy laughter, great smile, beautiful blue eyes, and kind, loving nature. He loved teaching children and working alongside his fellow colleagues and educators. He enjoyed coaching and playing sports at the grade school and high school levels. Bruce was always active, he was passionate about many sports including windsurfing, tennis, softball, and golf. In his later years, golf became his passion which he loved to share, playing with his wife, family, and friends.
His greatest love was his family. Bruce is survived by his wife, Rebecca Ponti Flory, and his daughter Emily Flory Greenly, son-in-law Chad Elliott Greenly, and two grand-children, Jack Neal Greenly and Charlotte Jeanne Greenly, and his German Shepherd Beau. Bruce passed peacefully on April 20, 2024. He was 76 years young. Bruce was loved completely by his family, and he loved his family back with the same intensity. Bruce was surrounded by his family, and at peace in his home, when he passed. We will miss his presence with each moment, but his memory will live within us forever.

It is with our deepest sadness we share our greatest loss,Bruce Neal Flory. He passed peacefully in his home, surrounded by his family. We are filled with grief. Bruce was a "good man". His family knew him not only as a good man, but to us, a great man, the corner stone of our family. Bruce was our rock, our anchor. We sought his advice and opinion, and looked to him for comfort and guidance. He was generous with his laughter, gave forgiveness where and when needed freely and completely, and loved completely. He greeted with an easy, broad smile and sparking blue eyes. His nickname in high school was, "Sunshine". Bruce loved sports and politics among other interests. He played tennis, softball, hiking, windsurfing, and golf, to name a few. And, he always made friends along the way. He loved being a career teacher, with connections to students and faculty that spanned his lifetime. He was never a casual friend, his friends were forever. Bruce was about family, and he was our glue. He was deeply loved husband, father, and grandfather, and friend, a family man. He loved his dog Beau. We are broken hearted , and beyond grief with his passing.

Diane and I we so saddened to learn of Bruce's recent passing. It was such a pleasure to reconnect with Bruce back in 2015, meeting you, sharing stories of years gone by. I got to play a round of golf with Bruce had lots of laughs about our days at Randolp-Macon Academy and enjoyed the friendship. He was a good friend, loved life, athletics and most of all you and his family. He will be truly missed and you and your family are in our thoughts and prayers. Dear Becky and family,
I just want to extend to you my deepest condolences for your loss! I was in Sweet Home a few days ago and a friend told me she´d seen on Facebook that Bruce had passed. I was shocked and saddened.
Even though it has been so long ago that we saw one another, I have thought of Bruce especially, but you also Becky. I´ve wondered how you were doing and where you are living now, etc. Each summer for a while now Joyce Brown (custodian back in the Holley school days) has been getting some of us together - whoever she can locate and who can make it. We always speak so fondly of Bruce. Honestly, I have for years, pictured him wind surfing and golfing. I´m glad he was still taking part in those activities.
I extend caring thoughts and concern as you move through the grief of losing Bruce. I am so very sorry for your loss.
With deepest sympathy,
Linda Weckesser

I loved teaching with Bruce at Holley, laughing together on playground duty, partying together. I remember when his high school basketball team went to state, the whole school lined up along the fence to cheer when the team bus passed on way to tournament.
After a dear friend of ours passed he drove to my new town to tell me in person.
I considered him a dear friend, my heart goes out to Becky with love.

In loving memory of Bruce, a beacon of kindness whose warmth touched the hearts of all who crossed paths with them. Their generosity and compassion knew no bounds, extending even to strangers, leaving a lasting impression on everyone fortunate enough to have known them. They will be deeply missed but forever cherished in the memories of those whose lives they brightened with their selfless acts of kindness. Rest in peace, dear friend.
