James Scanlon Obituary

James Michael Scanlon, 79, of Denton passed away on December 27, 2022, in Denton. He was born on September 7, 1943, in Detroit Michigan to James and Vera Scanlon.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force where he worked in armament and electronics maintenance. He served for over 7 years with a passion and pride for working on the electronics in Boeing B-52's. He earned the Air Force Longevity Service Award, The Air Force Good Conduct Medal, and the National Defense Service Medal. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant and one of his supervisors stated that he was an outstanding administrator with a high standard of performance who enthusiastically accepted his assignments, which established a reputation of reliability and trust. They also said he had a keen analytical mind and self-discipline that made him tenacious in pursuing a goal, which was often remarked upon.

After his military years he settled in Denton, Texas and became a member of the Hi Noon Lions Club where he participated in civic projects that helped the Denton community and loved cooking for club events. He would go on to become an insurance agent and eventually opened the Scanlon Insurance Agency. He was best known to his customers as being honest and, to a fault, frank. He would tell you like it was. He was thought of as being gruff but had a huge soft teddy bear heart on the inside. I've heard many say "Oh! I bought my first insurance from him!" He never met a stranger… After all, he was an insurance man. On a trip to Disney World, we were standing in line for a ride when I heard someone behind us say "Well gosh darn! If it isn't Jim Scanlon!"

Jim was a loving husband, father, and "poppy". As an avid foodie, he had a passion for desserts… but he also loved trying new foods and visiting new restaurants. He was also a great cook who was known for grilling a mean steak, and his friends and family loved to drop by when they knew he was throwing something on the grill. Since his time in the air force, his enthusiasm for electronics and mechanics grew into a love for technology that made him a proficient handyman, family IT help desk, and a fan of science-fiction shows. He has also seen every episode of Star Trek and rewatched them so much that our youngest child grew to know who most of the captains were before she knew what Star Trek was. Had she been a boy, she would've been named "Geordi".

He gained so much wisdom, knowledge, and experience over the years that he found every opportunity to pass it on to the ones he loved, giving them the foundation and resources to learn and experience more than he could imagine.

His family is heartbroken, but he got his wings and left this world on his own terms: in the comfort of his own home, in the company of his family, and in peace. Before he left, he said, "No regrets."

From our hearts, my love, sleep easy. 'Til we meet again.

He is survived by his wife, Carole Scanlon of Denton, daughters, Patricia Stovall and husband Paul of Ponder, Tx., and Kara Scanlon of Denton, sons, Ricky Bryant and wife Tina of Sanger, Tx., and Wesley Bryant, also of Sanger, Tx., eight grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his son, Jimbo Scanlon, and his mother and father.

I met Jim back in 1993 when Patty and I first became friends. I went to his office to visit Patty. He was intimidated to me but after 5 minutes he made me feel like I had known him forever! We had a special banter that we had with each other. He and Carol made me feel like I was one of the family. He was a special man that loved all you he considered family. And he will be greatly missed.

I met Mr. Scanlon in Little Elm when I was dating his daughter Patty. My first experiences of him were of a man trying to give his little girl freedom, while expressing concern and asking for confirmation of my intentions fairly often in the beginning. We developed a comfortable relationship and he was very straightforward with me about my possible futures. He was one of the few who tossed out hard facts at me instead of “The dream.” I didn’t really appreciate it at the time, but came to know the wisdom of the comments as well as the good intention behind them. You only risk confrontation with those you care about.

Since then, I’d seen nothing of him until facebook came along and Patty and I reconnected. Glad to hear Jim was still kicking, I asked about him and Patty shared how he was doing and how much she loved him.

When my oldest son, Josh, got in a bind over car insurance issues, Patty suggested her daddy could help Josh out, which he did and quickly, which is what Josh needed. At that point, I even had a hilarious phone call with Jim and he put me at ease.

From a bit of a distance, maybe. But after a lifetime of knowing someone, I don’t think you could find a kinder, more straightforward and honorable man than Jim Scanlon. Rest in Peace Sir! Much love and respect!

Mr. Scanlon was our neighbor for many years. From the first day we moved into our home, he exuded love and kindness to our family and continued to do so throughout our time there. I always enjoyed coming home and finding him sitting in our living room with my father, laughing his jolly laugh. He will be dearly missed by me and anyone who was lucky enough to know him.

To Carole, Kara, and the rest of his family, I extend my condolences and will keep you in my heart. May your memories of him help carry you through this dark time.

I met Jim many years ago when Patty and I were just starting high school . I spent many Saturdays in his home playing pool with Patty and just hanging out. He was always nice and welcoming to me . A little scary at first but a heart of gold . Patty and I have been friends for over 30 years so i have spent time with Jim on several occasions over the years. He would always asked about my family and how they were doing . He was very thoughtful.
He loved his family with all of his heart. He will surely be missed . Thinking of you during this difficult time and sending love and prayers. I love you Patty !

I first met Jim when his family lived in Amarillo. That is when I became friends with Patty and her family. Jim was always a very hard working man. Anytime I ever saw Jim he was always kind to me and my family. Jim truly loved his family. I loved Jim’s sense of humor! Jim your kind heart will definitely be missed.

I loved what Patty said were here daddy’s last words were to her “ I love you, will miss you but go live your life!” Great words, from a great man! RIP Jim, Until we meet again Jim!

To Patty, Carol, Kara and all of Jim’s family. May GOD embrace you in his arms and help you find love, peace and comfort as you walk through this difficult time together as a family! Love you all

Jim was our neighbor for many years. He was a wonderful man who was committed to and deeply loved his family. He was our cherished friend. He was caring, kind and very funny, with an infectious laugh, that never failed to keep us all entertained. We will miss him. We extend our deepest sympathies to his wife, Carole, and his daughter, Kara, as well as to the entirety of his beloved family. May the pain you feel now be nothing compared to the joy found within the memories of Jim. The world has indeed lost a big teddy bear who had an absolute heart of gold.
