Passed away peacefully in his home outside of Steamboat Springs on Friday, April 6, 2012. He is survived by Beryl Everett Atkinson, his wife of 55 years; his six children, Timandra Davenport, Asher Atkinson, Ellen Campbell, Elizabeth Wright, Anne Hyre, and Madeleine Atkinson Arsaga; his 10 grandchildren; and his younger sister, Elizabeth Scott. He was preceded in death by his older sister, Margaret Atkinson.
Asher retired in Steamboat Springs in 2006 after living in the Denver Metro area for 31 years. He had a long career in the oil and gas industry, which took him throughout the United States and the world, working abroad in Columbia, Egypt, Siberia and Qatar. Asher was born in New Brunswick, NJ in 1932 and grew up in Pennsylvania and on the New Jersey shore. He graduated from St. Lawrence University in 1953. He then served in the Army, graduating from the Army Language School in Monterey, CA in 1955, where he became fluent in Russian. He later obtained an MBA at UNLV.
Asher and Beryl met on the ski hill at St. Lawrence and raised their children primarily in Wooster, Ohio, Las Vegas and Denver. They shared their love of the outdoors with their entire family, all avid skiers. Asher loved antique cars, backpacking, bodysurfing, sailing and golfing, his horses and his beloved dog, Bernie, adopted from the Steamboat Animal Shelter.
A celebration of Asher's life will be held on Saturday, May 5, 2012 at 2:00 PM at the Atkinson residence.
