Jim Atkinson, 76

Jim Atkinson was born Feb. 22, 1949, in Helena. He was raised in Ronan and Helena and was a long-time Kalispell resident where he passed away Feb. 8, 2026.

He received a BA in Psychology at the University of Montana (Go Griz), and an MA in Special Education at the University of Oregon. He worked as a special education teacher, the director of Flathead Care Center, and the Director of Flathead County Agency on Aging.

The impact that Jim had on his many communities, and the good deeds and care he provided for others cannot be overstated. He was an amazing man and extraordinarily well loved. He was known by many names: Pappy, Jimmi (his given name), James, Jimbo, Jimmipie, Jimbones, and Uncle Clunk

Jim was proud to be a fifth generation Montanan. He loved Montana history, playing guitar, being outdoors, making stained glass, cooking, and watching football, especially the Seahawks and Griz. He was an avid collector of bottles, political pins, posters and coins. He had every Montana license plate from 1913 to 1969.

Jim had non-specific neuromuscular degeneration which he refused to let slow him down. He was frequently seen riding around town on his scooter and delighted many a child by giving them scooter rides at questionable speeds.

Jim was a member of Kiwanis, active in his church and served for 29 years as a city councilman. After his retirement he enjoyed exercising at the pool at the Summit, serving at Family Life Church, leadership in his Men's group, volunteering at the Northwest Montana History Museum, and running the non-profit Senior Mobile Home Repair.

He was preceded in death by parents Helen and Dwight, son Joel, and many beloved family members.

Jim is survived by his wife Vivian; children Crystal, Wade, Jason, and Wendy; brother Deni (Sandy); nine grandchildren; six great grandchildren, and innumerable friends, family and loved ones.

Jim was a man of steadfast faith, which guided him throughout his life.

Jim's funeral service is 5 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 22, at Family Life Christian Church, 1075 Foys Lake Rd. Streaming live on YouTube@FamilyLifeChristianChurch
