Michael Manning Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Bonney Watson Funeral Home - Federal Way on Feb. 21, 2026.
Michael James Manning

May 15, 1944 - February 4, 2026

Michael James Manning was born on May 15, 1944, at Georgetown Hospital in Washington, DC, to Capt. Manford James Manning and Regina "Jean" Ann Behan. His father was stationed in DC during part of the war. Michael was baptized on June 18, 1944, at St. Ann Church in DC, beginning a lifelong devotion to his Catholic faith.

Shortly after his first birthday, Michael traveled to Oregon with Jean to stay with his beloved grandparents, Samuel and Alice, until the war's end. When his father returned home, the family settled in Tacoma, Manford's hometown. Later, siblings Alan (Nancy) and Susan (George) completed the family while they were living in Lakewood.

Michael attended St. Leo's elementary school, St. Frances Cabrini Catholic school, and graduated from Bellarmine High School, the Class of 1962. He continued his studies at the University of San Francisco and later at Seattle University. It was at Seattle U, in a political science class, that he met the love of his life and future bride, Linda Kathleen Garbini. They dated for six months, were engaged for just over a year, and married on March 19, 1966, nearly 60 years ago, at St. George in Seattle-during Mike's spring break of his senior year. They honeymooned in San Francisco and began building a life rooted in faith, family, and love.

After a brief time at the University of Oregon for law school, they returned to the Seattle area. In 1967, they welcomed their first child, Erin (Gianluca), followed by Kasey in 1970, and Ryan (Jessica) in 1975. Their early years were spent in a Seattle apartment, then a starter home in Shoreline, a beloved home in Edmonds, and later in Federal Way. In retirement, they enjoyed a cherished "snowbird" home in Laveen, Arizona.

Michael was a natural provider and a tireless worker. As a boy, he caddied at local golf courses. As a young man he sold dog licenses, managed an apartment building, and later worked for Boeing, purchasing interior lighting for the 747 program. His career also included negotiating contracts for the Everett School District, serving as Cascade Chapter Manager for NECA, working as a labor relations manager for Hillhaven, the City of Tacoma, and finally retiring from the Washington State Ferries. Through his work, he and Linda enjoyed travel throughout the United States, Europe, and the Caribbean.

Beyond his career, Michael's passions were clear: his family, gardening, golf, and Husky football. His yards in both Federal Way and Laveen reflected his enthusiasm, blooming with flowers year-round thanks to his careful planning. He became an accomplished golfer, recording two holes-in-one and winning multiple tournaments. One highlight was golfing at St Andrews in Scotland and attending the U.S. Championship at Chambers Bay in 2015.

For decades, Michael and Linda were devoted University of Washington football season ticket holders, dating back to the early days of Don James. Rain or shine, they were there-often bringing their children, who all later attended the UW. One especially treasured memory was attending the final Pac-12 Oregon game in 2023 with Kasey, seated proudly on the 50-yard line. Mike passed down not just a love of Husky football, but the joy of New Year's Day games and friendly family wagers that created lifelong memories.

He cherished his extended family and treasured the lively Italian gatherings. Among his happiest times were the annual Memorial Day celebrations in Black Diamond. He loved his in-laws, Lindo and Elizabeth "Betty," and valued the many memories made with his brother-in-law Joseph (Jamie). He also loved being grandpa to Greta and Gabriele. He leaves behind numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family who held a special place in Michael's heart.

Retirement suited Michael well. In Laveen, he found wonderful new friendships and embraced community life for nearly a decade. He tutored a young student from Federal Way, he enjoyed cooking classes, and even trying his hand at baking. He brought communion to the homebound for a time, always living his faith in quiet service.

When Linda faced serious complications from spinal surgeries, Michael stepped fully and lovingly into the role of caretaker. He did everything-cooking, managing appointments, tending to her daily needs. During her numerous nursing home stays, he visited faithfully, always going to see "his girl." His devotion never wavered.

A vigilant and ever-faithful Catholic from his altar boy days through his years at Seattle University, it was fitting that he was on his way to Mass when he was involved in a car accident. We were profoundly grateful he survived the initial crash and believed he would recover and return home to us. On Wednesday February 4th, 2026 it was with deep shock and heartbreak that he passed from his injuries ten days earlier, leaving us shattered.

Mike, your time here was well spent. You left this world better than you found it. We will carry your lessons forward. Rest now. And yes-we will publish your book.

We take comfort in knowing that his parents, grandparents, and beloved in-laws were waiting with open arms as he entered eternal life.

Michael's funeral Mass will be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church on Saturday, March 7th at 12:00 noon. All are welcome.

A private interment will be held this summer at the Black Diamond Cemetery.
