James Bye Obituary

James Edward Bye died April 24, 2007 at home. Born in Thief River Falls, Minnesota on May 2, 1930, Jim spent his happy boyhood with his parents, Morris and Ida, and his brother, Bill. After graduating valedictorian from Anoka High School in 1948, Jim proceeded to the University of Minnesota where he finished in three years, Phi Beta Kappa and summa cum laude. At the U of M, Jim met the love of his life, Patricia Nadolski, to whom he was utterly devoted during their fifty-four year marriage. Admitted to Harvard Law School after college, Jim made the Law Review. Always the pioneer, Jim headed to Denver in 1954 to work for Holme, Roberts, and Owen, launching his illustrious fifty-three year career as a tax and estate attorney. A philanthropist in word and deed, Jim consistently raised the bar for giving in his firm and in Denver. Some of the many awards he received for his outstanding leadership and vision include the Alexis de Tocqueville Award, the Distinguished Service to Humanity Award from the Volunteers of America, and the Silver Beaver Award for volunteerism from the Boy Scouts of America. Jim also taught law at the University of Denver Law School where a scholarship for diversity bears his name. Surviving are Jim's children, David and Anne. David lives in the San Francisco Bay Area with his partner, Kevin, where they both teach literature and writing. Anne Rowe lives in Denver with her husband, Frank, where they run a publishing business and pursue many vital community activities. Their three daughters, Kate 14, Tory 12, and Biz 10, filled Grandpa Jim's heart with love everyday, especially after his beloved Pat died in November. The memorial service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, April 30 at Bethany Lutheran Church, 4500 E Hampden Ave, Englewood, CO 80113. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the NBR (Nadolski-Bye-Rowe) Family Fund, which has been and will continue to be used to support educational programs, or the charity of your choice. Contact the Denver Foundation for contributions to the NBR Family Fund.

The Denver community has truly lost a pioneer in Mr. James E. Bye. His compassion and philanthropy for the underserved will be truly missed. He firmly believed in the values of the Scouting program and truly made a difference in the lives of the youth of the Frontiersman Scouting program.

The world has lost a wonderful man who modeled compassion and giving. I feel fortunate to have known him and benefited from his kind spirit in what he did for me and for the Mexican Foundation Leaders Exchange Project of the Denver International Program. I will miss him.

I never met anyone who had the knowledge, insight and compassion that Jim had in his professional and personal relationships. What a great loss to the profession, the community and to his family.

Jim Bye was a huge gift to the Cross Community Coalition Family Resource Center, serving on our Board of Directors and offering his wise perspective on a wide range of issues and challenges. Above all we will treasure his personal friendship and his deep commitment to groups and individuals pushed to the margins of our communities.

I met him just once...when his brother, Billy married my sister, Sally. In just this short period of time, I saw why Billy was so proud, and loved him so much. We all lost a good one.

David and Anne, Jim was one of my father's dearest friends and was always extraordinarily kind and supportive of our family and of me. Jim's contributions to HR&O, the Denver legal community, and the DU Law School are legendary. He will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.

Anne and David.
Your father was a dear friend of my father's, and I'm so glad they had a few days together in Santa Barbara in March with their friend Roger. I'd never seen my father cry until he heard of Jim's death. Please know my family is praying for your families during this difficult time.
