James Logan Obituary

James C. Logan, Jr. died March 31, 2016 after a 4 1/2 year battle with pancreatic cancer. He was born March 13, 1936 in Mt. Vernon, NY, where his contributions to A.B. Davis High School were in student government, basketball, and track. He earned a BS from Yale, MBA from NYU and MS from Pace. Jim's long telephone industry career began with a summer job in Stockholm in 1957 followed by 20 years at NY Tel. In 1979 he moved to Mountain Bell Directory. He was there when the U.S. Justice Department mandated the break-up of the "Old Bell System." Jim was appointed to lead a national team that developed the plan for the separation of Yellow Page directories into independent books for each company. That put new life into the directory business. From 1992-1999 he served as president of the Yellow Pages Publishers Association and, while there, expanded it to include many companies from Europe and the Pacific Rim. Beyond his business achievements he shared his leadership skills with Literacy Volunteers of America, Summer Scholars, Junior Achievement, Rotary Club, United Negro College Fund, Montview Blvd. Presbyterian Church, Ghost Ranch, Colorado Council of Churches, and others. A natural athlete, Jim was a life-long tennis player. Jim rarely played golf until he retired because of the time it required. His highest priority was always his family. His late boss, Bill Gardner, quoted Kipling in describing Jim: he could talk with crowds and keep his virtue--or walk with kings--nor lose the common touch. Jim and his wife, Marni, have four children and seven grandchildren, all in the Denver area. Memorial gifts may be sent to: Montview Blvd. Presbyterian Church or United Negro College Fund. A memorial service will be held at Montview Church, May 14, 2016 at 11:00 a.m.

I only got to know Jim within the last few years, but he made a strong impression on me as a wise, kind, and capable man. I have come to think of him as a role model for a life well lived.

My heart goes out to Jim's family and his many friends.
