Katharine Nanda Obituary

Nanda, Katharine

Katharine Kunz Nanda died Monday, August 28, following a courageous battle with abdominal cancer. Born and raised in Denver to Calvin and Missy Kunz, Katharine graduated from East High School in 1969. She studied at the University of Chicago and Colorado Women's College and earned a JD and an MA (Art History) from the University of Denver. Katharine was a lifelong vegetarian, practiced transcendental meditation, and was deeply spiritual in her Hindu faith. She practiced law as a partner in a law firm, as a solo practitioner, and for the State of Colorado. She also provided extensive pro bono work.
Katharine married Ved Nanda, a professor at the University of Denver Law School, in 1982. She was Ved's soulmate and right hand. They traveled the world extensively and she was involved in many community groups and nonprofits. The light of her life was their daughter Anjali, and two granddaughters, Sena and Gigi, who lovingly referred to her as Nani.
Compassionate, kind, devoted, caring, and humble, Katharine has left a lasting mark on so many. She always put others first and epitomized selflessness and service to others. She loved deeply and will be missed equally. She leaves behind her husband, Ved, daughter Anjali, son-in-law, Terence, granddaughters, two sisters, Mary Jenson and Ann Irving, two nephews, one niece, and many extended relatives in the US and India. Donations may be made in Katharine's honor to the American Cancer Society, the Nanda Center for International Law, Ved and Katharine Nanda Scholarship at the University of Denver, or charity of choice.

Dear Ved and Anjali, I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of your beloved wife and mother, Katharine. She was not only a dear friend some years ago but also a guiding light. Her grace and wisdom were truly inspirational. Wishing you Godspeed as you continue your journey without her by your sides.

I am so sad as I read this. Cancer is evil. Kathy was the same in elementary thru high school. Super intelligent and smart, loving, kind, giving. I loved sharing secrets with her when we were besties 2-5th grades. We had our crew and our adventures! A couple of Denver Bears games, party at cabin, a couple of self-produced plays, lots of sleepovers and just days together, along with other friends. She taught me to ice skate, patiently and not embarrassed by my use of a walker-like aid to keep me on my feet and off my ankles. Loved every member of her family. My family moved several times and we lost track of each other. She had a big impact early in my life. Family and friends are in my heart and prayers
