Lelon Lewis Obituary

Lewis, Lelon Albert
August 15, 1954 - April 3, 2021

Easter, April 4, 2021 - "Shattered: Lonnie's plane has crashed!"
Lelon Albert Lewis was born August 15, 1954 in Denver. Lonnie was an inquisitive little boy - he scored high in his studies. He learned to play accordion and performed with "The Accordionaires" and also taught himself to play guitar. In 1972, Lonnie graduated with honors from Ranum High School in Westminster, Colorado. Lonnie's game was tennis, lettering in high school, competing during college and playing for years in regional tournaments. Lonnie earned degrees in English and Electrical Engineering from the University of Colorado in Boulder. Lonnie was a respected technical writer for the Bureau of Reclamation. He was editor of critical manuals and virtually created computer programs for the Bureau. Lonnie served at the Bureau for 30 years, retiring in 2009. Lonnie was a world traveler. Ursula of Germany was drawn by him to study at the University of Colorado. His last venture was to South America where he enjoyed taking pictures with his drone. Lonnie married Christy Whaley in 1983 though they parted ways not long after. He married Wynette in 1992. He became Dad to two daughters, Marina and Sierra. Wynn took the children and moved on in a short time. Lonnie adopted various interests, the last becoming a sports pilot and owner of an airplane. Cause of the fatal crash on April 3, 2021 at 17:35, is under investigation. Lonnie's parents, Albert Lelon and Darlene Lewis; sister Lynn and Garry Meek's family; brother Lance and Sheri Lewis' family; most from Grand Junction; and Marina and Sierra Lewis of Portland, Oregon remain deeply in grief. Lonnie's family is eternally grateful to Civil Air Patrol Commander Mark Young for his prompt effort to locate and identify the plane, and his compassionate effort to locate and inform the family, and to the Alpine Rescue Team for taking Lonnie from the plane on Easter Sunday (April 4). Lonnie's family is planning a special remembrance event for Lonnie. Suggested remembrances for Lonnie can be sent to Alpine Rescue Team - P.O. Box 934, Evergreen, CO 80437.

Don, Pete, Deena - The glimpse into Lonnie's time with Bureau of Reclamation warmed my heart.

I worked with Lonnie for a number of years on water resources manuals and other technical publications. He was a true professional, always knowledgeable, articulate and cordial. His death is a real tragedy and my prayers and sympathies go out to his whole family.

I was Lonnie's coworker for 13 years and his supervisor for 5 of those years. Among the technical editing staff, he was noted for his keen understanding of technology and also of the technical subject matter in the reports he reviewed. As Deena wrote, he was kind, courteous, and professional and, as I recall, he had one entire wall of his cubicle lined with artfully arranged empty Diet Dr. Pepper cans.

So sorry to hear about Lonnie’s death and my prayers are with his family. We were married for a short time, but had fun playing tennis and traveling. Since I later became a flight attendant, I think it’s interesting (not too mention - cool) that he became a pilot. Again, my sincere condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear of Lonnie’s death and my prayers are with his family. We were married for a short time, but had fun on the tennis courts and traveling. Since I later became a flight attendant, I think it’s interesting (and cool!) that he became a pilot. Again, my sincere condolences to his family.

I had the pleasure of working with Lonnie Lewis for many years. He was always kind, courteous, and professional. He has been sorely missed at Reclamation.
