Dear Mrs. Schieffer-
You are in my thoughts as is Susan. She was a wonderful woman who gave so many of us so much strength. She was full of love and spread her love everywhere. We are all so fortunate to have known her. I am honored to say she was my friend. My peace be with you.

Dear Mrs. Ruth:
May the peace that comes from memories of love shared with Susan, comfort you, her brothers and sisters, now and in the days ahead, because she was one of those who continue to light up the world long after they have gone.
Holy Scriptures says: A loyal friend is a powerful defense; whoever finds one has indeed found a treasure (Ecclesiasticus 6, 14-17). I give thanks to our Lord for giving me Susan as a friend for more than 24 years and shared with her a lot of beautiful moments in Managua, Nicaragua and in Denver. Now a new and eternal dwelling has been made ready for my very dear friend Susan in heaven. It is hard to say and difficult to accept but we saddened by her early departure are faithful and consoled by the promise of immortality to come.
I'd like to share with you the following thoughts:
Susan was a woman with healthy self-esteem, a sense of basic confidence and a sense of being worthy of happiness.
She was rational, down-to-earth, intuitive, creative, independent, flexible, skillful to manage change, willing to admit and correct mistakes, benevolent and very cooperative.
Susan had this strong drive to express herself reflecting the sense of richness within emotionally, intellectually, spiritually;
She had a mind that was active rather than passive;
Susan stayed alert to and curious about any information that would caused her to modify her course or correct her assumptions;
She persevered in the attempt to understand in spite of difficulties;
Susan was always seeking to expand awareness a commitment to learning- therefore a commitment to growth as a way of life.
She had the willingness to stand up for herself, to be who she was openly, to treat herself with respect in all human encounters. She spoke and acted from her innermost convictions and feelings as a way of life, as a rule.
Susan cultivated within herself a capacity for self-discipline as a requirement of a successful life process.
She practiced personal integrity: she was honest, reliable and trustworthy.
Susan was a teacher that helped built a sense of trust in students, based her classroom control on understanding, joint cooperation and involvement, working through problems, caring, and mutual respect. Her positive relationship allowed children to learn and to grow in their confidence and ability to function independently.
Finally, she loved her parents, brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews and friends deeply.
Susan will always be in my heart and forever in my memory. May she rest in peace.

Susan, it is with great sadness that your family and friends bid you goodbye from their presence but it is with great joy that they celebrate your entry into your true home in Heaven. May God's love and peace surround them as you surrounded them with your love. You were a beautiful person, full of love and compassion for others. You will be greatly missed but we all are greatly blessed for having known you. Thank you for loving us!

When Theresa called to tell me Susan had died, one of my reactions was, She was my best friend. When I hung up the phone I thought, I bet Theresa is getting a lot of that. Susan had lots of best friends because she was such a good friend.
Susan took her time - at everything. Maybe in her honor we could take a walk in her beloved mountains and take the time to appreciate their beauty. We could take the time to read a good book and sip tea, loose leaf and brewed in a teapot, of course. We could take the time to spend more time with those we hold so dear. Then we could thank Susan for teaching us to do so.

I don't even know where to begin. Susan was just amazing. Last year was my first year teaching and being that it was my first year, she imparted her wealth of knowledge on me, most days we spent time together planning, having lunch or just catching up. I will always miss our time together. Susan had a very special gift of making you feel like you are the most special person ever when really, she was the most special person ever. She was kind and thoughtful in everything she did from making delicious treats, supporting you with advice and knowledge, listening to you, giving you drops in your bucket or my favorite, that still sits on my desk today, a rock that says "You do rock!" She never stopped giving or loving. I will forever miss and remember her. Love you Schiefs!

Dear Susan, some may think you are not with us anymore but you are because those of us who met you will never forget you. I am sad for your sudden departure, but we all can say that very few people live life to the fullest like you did. I still remember the last time I saw you, you greeted me with that warm smile on your face. You are unforgettable and I am thankful for having met such a wonderful person like you. It was many years ago that we met at Goldrick when you taught third grade. However, we remained friends after you left. I wish I could share with you a moment in our lives again and tell you how special you are to many of us. I don't know if there is a life after this one, but if there is I hope I can see you again to tell you how much you are missed by all of those whose lives you touched.

OH my goodness I am sorry for your/our loss!
Susan and I graduated from Marycrest High School in 1981 and then I was fortunate enough to have crossed paths with her a few times in recent years as I lived near her in NW Denver for awhile before she moved near St. Mary's Glacier...
I would say that although we were always friendly, we weren't all that close and I honestly have to say that she was understandably a little hesitant to embrace my crazy high school demeanor?! Having said that, as I matured 'round senior year, Susan and I interacted a lot more and had some good laughs! She was intellectual, fun and oozed competency. Susan was actually an excellent athlete too--she was a leader on the track field/cross-country route for sure and I think that was how we started hanging out a little more together. The thing about Susan was that she wasn't big on the limelight--right? She was always aware of what was going on, cared a lot, showed a ton of integrity and independence in all her actions, but she never had to be the center of attention or the star of the show. (She was also a part of things more than she might have let on--she didn't sit on the fringes by any means!) I doubt there would be anyone who would have had a cross word with Susan or thought poorly of her and that says a lot w/ high school girls.
In reflecting on our high school "career" I always see your sister with a smile on her face--so approachable! I love that she joined the Peace Corps--of course she did! And finally, what a gift that she shared her language skills with so many disadvantaged DPS students- a legacy indeed!
I miss her and think the world is just a wee bit scarier without her grace.
God bless your family & THANKS for sharing Susan with us to lead the way...

I worked with Susan last year at Fairview Elementary. It was my first year teaching and I needed some help in my math instruction. I reached out to Susan and the next day she was in my classroom ready to help. She was always finding resources and new ideas for me to use and she never left my room without leaving a positive and encouraging note. Today I found one of those notes from her in my room. Susan was one of the most thoughtful and kind people I have ever met. She played an important role to me in my first year of my career and I will never forget her.

I have so many wonderful memories of Sue. From our time in Paraguay through our travels, she always had an excitement for life and spread joy to the people that she encountered. She loved her special ed. class in Paraguay and was instrumental in helping a student get a hare lip and cleft palate operation, which brought the girl out of her shell and changed her life. Sue always looked out for others and had their best interests at heart. By showing kindness toward others, she brightened the world for so many people. Sue loved to travel and explore the world. She loved the sights, sounds, smells, and hustle bustle of marketplaces from Asuncion to Havana. yet she also loved the serenity and quietude of nature from Tierra del Fuego, to the Amazon rain forest, to Grand Gulch. I was so fortunately to have know such a kind and caring person such as Sue. She will be sorely missed. Rest in peace, dear Sue, knowing that your spirit lives on in the multitudes of people who you touched.

From my home in Chile
Dear Schieffer family, colleagues, friends, everyone,
It is with great pain in my soul I would like to say my last goodbye to my dear and unforgettable friend Susan.
She was an angel that God sent us and it was a pleasure to have known her. She passed by quickly in our lives and left many unforgettable footprints. She impacted many generations of children, anxious to learn. She loved what she did in life. Each day, she flew higher. She was an angel that taught us to love the simple things in life. She didn't need luxuries or great comforts to be happy. She loved the purity of nature, enjoyed long walks. As a song in Spanish says, she made her path as we walked upon it.
She was a whole being, giving through service to others, a hard worker, studious, and very self-motivated, nothing was too hard for her, a complete woman. She loved a good cup of tea, a delicious pastry and a home cooked meal. Her favorite Chilean meal was a Chilean Shepard's Pie. We would celebrate her birthdays with different types of homemade cakes, especially chocolate and her eyes would light up.
Susan, your beautiful smile will always be with me. I will miss you but I know you will always be in some corner of the mountains, observing and enjoying the peace of your beautiful St. Mary's Glacier. Our Lord has received you in his arms, may you rest in peace my unforgettable friend, my kindred spirit.
Love,
Carmen

Susan was a dear friend of many years. She as a caring, brave, incredibly bright, strong, and an highly talented individual. I will miss sharing meals, a cup of tea, conversations, walks...but mostly I will miss her, Susan Schieffer, a most unique person. She was anxious to retire in a couple of years and we had plans for future travels and a visit here in Chile in our home and, of course exploring the world around us. She is in our hearts and will always be with us, whether shopping for crafts or antiques,finishing a home project, watching the night sky in the mountains, drinking a cup of tea or just enjoying a moment in life. She so lived life so fully and enjoyed so many things in life. I'll miss her gifts of cookies or her famous zucchini bread. In her short life, she touched many lives profoundly and we were blessed to have her as a friend.
