Verlene Newkirk

1932 - 2017

Verlene Lucille Newkirk, 84, died peacefully with her family and friends by her side on December 3, 2017. Born in Alta Vista, Kansas on December 27, 1932. She married Robert Newkirk in January 1952 in Eskridge, Kansas. They moved to Denver in 1955. She worked at Chevron Oil starting in 1956 and retired in November, 1986 after 30 years of service. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, heavily involved in her church, and will be dearly missed by all. She filled her golden years with multiple hobbies (crocheting baby blankets, sewing, and baking for her grandchildren), kept an active social calendar, and cheered for the Rockies, Broncos, and Nuggets through thick and thin. She was preceded in death by her husband Robert Newkirk of Denver, Colorado; her parents Alvin and Ellen Massey; and her sister Josephine Britton. She is lovingly survived by her children Gene (Katie) Newkirk, and Charlene (Steve) Hayward; and by five grandchildren: Rebecca (Erin) Hayward, Amy (Nick) Shinton, and Kiona Newkirk. Services will be held on Thursday December 7, 2017, viewing at 9:30 AM, rosary beginning at 10:00 AM and a mass at 11:00 AM, followed by a reception lunch. Services will take place at Our Lady of Fatima Church, located at 1958 Miller Street, Lakewood, CO 80215.
