Brent Checketts Obituary

Brent Eldon Checketts 1942 ~ 2006 LAYTON - Our beloved husband, father, grandfather and brother passed away unexpectedly, Saturday, March 4, 2006 at McKay Dee Hospital of heart failure. Brent (Bruno) was born August 29, 1942 to John Eldon Checketts and Gertrude Van De Graff; he was the eldest of their four children. Brent was raised in Ogden, Utah and graduated from Weber High School in 1960. He served a mission to Mexico from 1962-1964. Brent received an Athletic Scholarship to Utah State University for Football, Basketball, and Baseball in 1960. He received another Athletic Scholarship to Weber State College for Basketball and Baseball in 1964. Brent was on the Utah State American Legion All-Star Baseball team in 1959 and on the Utah State All-State Baseball team in 1960. He coached Baseball at Weber High (American Legion) from 1964-1965. Brent attended Utah State University, Brigham Young University, Weber State college where he earned his B.A. in Spanish in 1967 and Utah State University where he earned his Masters of Arts degree in History in 1971. He retired after 37 years of teaching in 2005. Brent married Eda (Edie) Radford in 1967 and they were later divorced. He married Rosemary Peterson in 1979 and they were later divorced. He married his Honey Bun, Sherri Brittain on June 13, 2003. Brent was an educator in Davis School District serving as a History and Spanish teacher for 37 years at Viewmont High, Woods Cross High and Layton High School. Brent also taught Adult Drivers Education in Clearfield, which he thoroughly enjoyed. Brent (Coach) also coached basketball, football and baseball for Viewmont, Woods Cross and Layton High School from 1964 to 1996. He coached his team to win the 4-A championship for girls' basketball in the 1983-1984 season for Layton High School. Brent enjoyed hunting, fishing, golfing, snowmobiling, riding ATV's and traveling with his wife, Sherri. He will be missed deeply by all of his friends and family, who enjoyed being with him during those activities. He loved being outdoors and was always, as he would say, dabbling and puttering around in the yard. Brent was a loving, kind and giving man. He never forgot a birthday, anniversary or sending a thank you, get well or sympathy card to a friend or family member. Brent would lend his hand to many a neighbor, friend and family member. He enjoyed playing with his grandchildren and watching them play sports; they were the light of his life. Brent had so much love for his children, grandchildren and wife and he showed it in so many ways. He gave them unconditional love and respect. He took care of them with so much compassion and understanding. He was selfless and had a positive can-do attitude. Brent loved to tell jokes and stories. He always wanted to make others smile and laugh. He would at times play pranks on his family, friends, peers, students and secretaries at school and most would return the favor, which made it more enjoyable for him. Remember Brent for his love, his gentle kindness, his smile, his deep but kind voice and for bringing happiness and laughter wherever he went. "Did I tell you about...?" Brent was one of my favorite teachers in high school. I always walked out of having learned something. I felt he was a man who demanded respect but was also willing to give respect back. I loved his comical side and his sense of humor. I felt that he reached out to the youth and young adults to try and teach them a lesson about life and what life is really about. I was in his class when the Oklahoma City bombing took place in 1995 and I remember the concern that he had for everyone and wanted to talk about so that we could our feelings out. There were alot of great teachers at Layton High, but MR. Checketts was a one of a kind. Gone but not forgotten, God bless the Checketts family.

We were sadened to hear of Brents passing. Please accept our condolences. It has been a long time since we have seen Brent, but we will always remember the impact he had on our lives. He was more than a teacher to us, he was a friend. We knew him when he was a young father with Allison & Joseph. We wish all of his family the very best!

I had Mr. Checketts for AP History.( woods cross ) He was the best and most influential teacher I had throughout my entire education. He talked me into throwing a chicken into another teacher's classroom. It is one of my fondest memories. I was saddened to hear of his passing. I now love history. I have thought of him often through my life. I wish I would have sent him a note to let him know how he influenced me.

Sherri,

I am so sorry to hear about Brent. We all loved him so much. He brightened our every day. There are so many fond memories of Brent. He defintely left foot prints in our hearts. His funny little jokes will make us laugh forever. I can't believe he's gone.

He was so happy since he met you, you completed him. He would just beam when he talked to you. He would set in the office next to my desk and call you just to say, "I Love You, and Miss You".

It was so cute, and we would tease him.

Both my kids had Brent for their teacher. They loved his funny little jokes. Jared remembers in the Dr. Ed car, driving down the road and looking over at Mr. Checketts, he was asleep. He always gets a chuckle out of that one. Brent was so nice to him when he would come in to the office. He gave him alot of encouragement.

Jamie loved Brent for a teacher. He was always so nice to her. Her daughter Tiffany was in the daycare at Layton High for the last 4 years Brent was there. He was grandpa Brent to the staffs kids and grandkids. He would bring her little treats into the office when we were ready to go home.

I could go on forever, such a kind and generous man.
