Charles Castle Obituary

Charles Hilmon Castle
In Loving Memory
Salt Lake City, UT-Our beloved father, grandfather and great grandfather, Charles Hilmon Castle, peacefully passed away December 26, 2016 in Salt Lake City, Utah. He lived a long life; a life of his choosing. Born February 15, 1928 in a home near the small rural town of Walthall, Mississippi to Hays Delashman and Ruby Bowen Castle. He spent most of his childhood in Pachuta, Mississippi. At the age of eight, he contracted polio that resulted in a disability affecting his ability to walk for the rest of his life. Hilmon's disability did not keep him from being physically active. He was the first Eagle Scout from Pachuta, Mississippi. He played both high school football and basketball, played in the marching band in high school and college and won the Golden-Glove Boxing Novice Division at Ole Miss.
Not wanting to ever return to work in his father's saw mill, Hilmon enrolled at the University of Mississippi one week after he graduated from high school. He continued his education until graduating from Duke University Medical School in 1951. After completing a medical internship at Duke Hospital, Hilmon moved to Salt Lake City for residency training at the old Salt Lake County Hospital followed by a fellowship in cardiology. Hilmon discovered skiing, tennis (which he played almost daily until his early eighties) and a new home in Utah. He served for two years as an Internist and Captain in the United States Air Force in Madrid, Spain and for nine years as a flight surgeon with the Utah National Guard. His early life of hardship in rural Mississippi was an abiding influence on Hilmon's professional commitment. He was always interested in ways to provide medical care to underserved populations. In 1959, Hilmon accepted a faculty position at the University of Utah College of Medicine and in 1970, he became the chairman of the newly created Department of Family and Preventative Medicine that he chaired until 1984. During that time, he spent many weekends traveling the country looking at programs of Community Medicine as well as Physician Assistant programs. He was instrumental in starting both training programs in Utah. He also chaired the American Heart Association Teaching Fellowship Program and in 1985 the Utah Medical Association named him Physician of the year. Hilmon taught countless fledging physicians at the University of Utah College of Medicine. It was always a source of pleasure for him to encounter his students in the community and in the field. He experienced personal fulfillment when he saw their good work and dedication to the profession he loved.
He is survived by 5 children, Cynthia Collins, Carolyn Havert, Cy Castle, Chris Castle and Candace Neff, grandchildren, great grandchildren and his two brothers, Deral Grey and Harroll Dean. He is proceeded in death by his oldest brother, Hays.
A private memorial services will take place on Memorial-Day weekend in Mississippi. A marker will be placed and his ashes spread in Bellefontaine and Sapa where his father and mother are respectively buried. To share thoughts and memories with our family please visit www.cityviewmemoriam.com.

It was my pleasure to know Hilmon, as we called him as a leader on the world of Physician Assistant Education in the early - mid1970's. He served two terms as President of APAP (PAEA). I enjoyed seeing him at meetings and at Utah. We played tennis. He was instrumental in the collaborative teaching of medical and PA students. He was a true gentlemen and we were all privileged to have known him. Sending love to family, friends and colleagues. Alfred Sadler MD

Hilmon Castle MD was a long time friend and colleague of mine dating back to the early 1970's when we both became active in PA Education and in the Association of Physician Assistant Programs, of which he was the fourth President. I admired his commitment to patients, students and clinical excellence at the University of Utah.

He will be missed by family, friends and colleagues.

Hilmon was a titan of medicine. He changed my life in that he almost singlehandedly created the Physician Assistant (PA) Program in Utah from which I graduated and have had a many decade career. Hilmon also started the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine (DFPM) at the University of Utah, under which the PA program resides. Hilmon generously created an enduring endowment for PA student scholarships who bring to medicine characteristics that he embodied - interviewing skills, careful and intelligent physical exam, ability to adapt to changes in medicine, and an ongoing curiosity. Students receive the scholarship for their exceptional clinical skills. Hilmon and I wrote up the history of the University of Utah's Community Health Centers (where I worked for 30+ years) whose clinics originally were placed under DFPM. Hilmon always wanted to write the overall history of DFPM. He loved to write and wrote a treasured biography. He was kind, a mentor, and generous. Hilmon had an unparalleled bedside manner with his patients. We are sorry to hear of his passing. He was a great man. Don and Kathy Pedersen

Sorry to hear of Dr. Castle's passing. I was his office nurse for many years, and so admired the way he treated his patients, his infinite knowledge, and his willingness to teach me and so many others. In my 50+ years career as a nurse, he will always be one of the physicians I respected the most, and am honored to have been his nurse. Please accept my condolences and best wishes.

As a member of Hilmon's memoir writing group for a long, productive time, I was happy to see his book completed and published. We enjoyed a lot of serious reflection together. He was a model of commitment and a stimulating companion. I cherish the time our group worked together.

Rest In Peace, Dr Castle.

You were a great mentor supporting me early in my training and career as a Physician Assistant. Your influence has carried with me these past 27 years and I even spent the last 9 years as a PA in cardiology as a DOD civilian. Don't think I ever told you that!

Medical care you provided my husband Phil early in his disease was superb and, again, for that we thank you.

I will always treasure my friendship with you and Linda!

Peace to all of your family and friends!
Always,
Sue

Our deepest sympathy to the Castle Family,
We were sorry to learn of Hilmon's passing. We were friends and shared many good memories with Hilmon and his children at the Salt Lake Tennis Club. As professional colleagues we were well aware of Hilmon's numerous contributions in teaching and medical practice. His was a life well lived.

Hilmon was an excellent physician and teacher. Respected, admired, and loved by his students and patients. Without his tireless efforts, the PA profession would not have been as successful as it is. He will be missed by all who knew him and his teaching will continue to impact patient care long after his passing.

I worked closely with Hilmon the eight years he served on the School of Medicine Alumni Board. He was very supportive of the organization and brought many good ideas to fruition while he was a board member. He helped start the Half Century Society, for graduates 50 years out from their medical school graduation, and served on the planning committee for many years. He encouraged the board to include all former House Staff trainees under the SOM Alumni umbrella and helped establish the Golden Anniversary Award selection committee. He received the School of Medicine's Distinguished Service Award in 2009 for his dedication and service to the school. He was a cardiologist by training, but a primary care physician with a concern for the rural populations of medically underserved individuals. He was very committed to the Physician's Assistant program he helped establish while chair of the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine and he and Linda supported an endowed scholarship to help train PA's. A little known fact was that he was a proud member of the Caterpillar Club for having to parachute out of a disabled plane. I enjoyed my friendship with he and Linda and will miss him. He fought the valiant fight up until the end when his body finally gave out on him.
