Curtis Giles Obituary

1940 ~ 2014
Curtis LaVerl Giles died on September 30, 2014 while serving his fourth mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the England London Mission with his dear wife, Ilene Michie Giles.
Curt was born in Center Creek, Utah to Forrest Grant and Viola Sweat Giles on May 6, 1940. Curt attended Wasatch High School until 1958, after which he worked for the National Forest Service for 3 summers. In 1960, Curt left to serve for 2 ½ years in the French East Mission which included Switzerland and France.
When Curt returned from his mission he married his high school sweetheart, Ilene, on July 26, 1963 in the Salt Lake Temple. Curt received a B.A. degree in Education and French from BYU in 1965. He continued education there and completed his Masters Degree in Business Administration in 1967.
From 1967 to 1993, Curt's career led him to Chicago and St. Louis where he worked in banking and finance for Continental National Bank, County National Bank Corporation, and Morgan Systems, Inc. In May of 1993, Curt moved with his family to Midway, Utah where he was manager of WASCO Credit Union for 10 years, and then from 2006 to 2010 was controller of Local Book Publishing.
Throughout his life, Curt served faithfully in many church callings. On Christmas Day 1977, Curt was set apart as bishop of the St. Louis 3rd Ward. Later he also served in the St. Louis Stake Presidency. After relocating to Midway in 1993, Curt continued fulfilling other church callings, including serving as a counselor in the Midway Stake Presidency.
In March of 2003, Curt was called as Mission President, along with Ilene, over the Haiti Port-au-Prince Mission. Experiences among the humble and wonderful people of Haiti, and the dedicated missionaries they served with, blessed their lives immeasurably. After completing their mission in Haiti, Curt served as an assistant in the Heber Valley Camp Leadership, as a temple worker in the Provo Temple, and as a volunteer in the Provo Missionary Training Center.
From September of 2010 until April 2012, Curt and Ilene served in the Canada Montreal Mission. During this time, blessings were received by service in the French-speaking Hochelaga Ward, in the mission office, among the missionaries, and in the Montreal Quebec Temple.
In 2013, Curt and Ilene planned and celebrated an amazing 50th wedding anniversary with their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. It was a "forever family" memory never to be forgotten.
Curt loved people and constantly sought ways to serve those around him wherever he went. He loved walking, gardening, woodworking, fishing, spending time outdoors, and teasing his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was married for 51 beautiful years to the love of his life.
Curt is survived by his wife and six children; Lisa (Terry) Harward, Janine (Darryl) Hardy, Carla (Bryan) Willets, Brad (Siska) Giles, Greg (Melissa) Giles, and David (Sara) Giles. He is preceded in death by his parents and sister Enid, and survived by his other siblings Melva, Paul, Fay, Gaylen, and Marty. He is also survived by 22 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.
A viewing will be held both Wednesday, October 8th, from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, and Thursday, October 9th, from 9:30am to 10:30am at the Midway LDS Stake Center (165 N. Center Street, Midway). Funeral services will be held following the Thursday viewing at 11:00am. Interment at the Midway City Cemetery.
Curt will be dearly missed by all who knew him. Condolences may be sent to the family at www.OlpinHoopes.com.

Curtis was my favorite senior companion when we were in St. Etienne, France. We worked hard and had great success. He was a great example to me and the other missionaries. Fortunately I was able to meet with him while he was on a mission in Montreal. Condolences to Ilene and family.

Dear Ilene and Family,
To hear of Curt's passing was as much of a shock as the news those many years ago that you were leaving St Louis! You had welcomed us to the neighborhood with open arms and loving hearts and never let us down in your efforts to lead, love and serve. What a pair you two are! I'm so glad that you have spread your goodness around in so many places. We have all been truly blessed by your friendship and love. Words like genuine, gentle, unselfish, Christlike come to mind when I think of the two of you. Our too-short time together produced many memories that have been precious to us over the years. Thank you for those.
We didn't know your daughters, having become a part of your lives after they had left home but we are so grateful that you raised such fine sons. They were wonderful friends and peers of our children. We pray for you and your family...that you will feel Heavenly Father's encircling love and comfort...knowing you have a truly FOREVER FAMILY! We love you!

Dear Ilene & Family, Our family was saved by your family so many times. I personally looked to him as my chief mentor. We had so many wonderful times in your home and with you in St Louis. His thoughtful care and wisdom and love shine so brightly even now! Your wonderful family accepted ours in to your life and made our lives so much more full and meaningful. His very gentle but purposeful demeanor was that of a true ambassador. I know that he will be put to work on the other side, blessing the lives of so many others in the future. We will always love you both for your families love and cherish the service you both have given so thoughtfully through the years. He's looking down on us and we will see him again.
I'm sure he will put us to work!

Ilene, we were all stunned and saddened at the loss of your dear husband. Please remember how much you are loved by all the sisters on your shift at the Provo Temple. We pray Heavenly Father will bring you comfort and encircle you in the arms of his love . . . as you have so often done to us with your love. Love, Linda Wilson and the Thursday 1 Shift.

Dear Ilene and Family,
Our hearts are filled with love and appreciation for the pleasant memories we have of our close association with you during your years in St. Louis. I remember well the first day we met. You had just moved from Chicago with your precious young family. Your bright countenances and positive spirits made an immediate impression that this was an outstanding couple whom the Lord had sent to bless our ward. Time proved that this was not just a temporary impression, but an accurate assessment, as evidenced by your faithful service in all of your very important ward and stake callings, including our Bishop and member of the stake presidency. Not only were we blessed with your devoted service, but also with a warm and wonderful friendship. Each Christmas we still fondly recall the memory of your lovely family at our front door with a plate of goodies and a "We Wish You a Merry Christmas" greeting. We are grateful that friends, like families, can be together forever. God bless you all with pleasant, vivid memories of the wonderful times you all spent together with your loving and righteous husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather who has successfully completed his sacred stewardship and has gone on to prepare a place for each of you.
Love,
Dick and Linda Oscarson
