Daryl McCarty Obituary

1930 ~ 2015
Our loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, Dr. Daryl John McCarty, Sr., passed away on Sunday, February 8, 2015 in Salt Lake City, Utah.
He was born on May 13, 1930 in Garfield, Utah to Emerson Eugene McCarty, Sr. and Amy Jackson McCarty. He married his childhood sweetheart, Helen Brown, on October 13, 1950 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple and together they raised four children.
Daryl accomplished many notable achievements during his lifetime and set a great example for his children by working hard and putting in an honest day's work. He graduated from Cyprus High School in Magna, Utah and served in the United States Army. Daryl went on to earn a B.S., M.S., and a Doctorate (Ed.D) Degree in Elementary Education from the University of Utah. Daryl began his career as an elementary school teacher and was later a Principal. He was hired as the Executive Director for the Utah Education Association and later was the Associate Superintendent for the Utah State Office of Education. His efforts in education gave him the privilege of working with members of the Utah State Legislature, Governors, and Utah's delegation to the US Congress. He also worked for Utah Rural Schools Association, Wasatch Education Systems, Utah Retired School Employees Association, and Utah State University - Utah Assistive Technology Program/Foundation. He served on various professional organizations and was recognized with numerous honors and awards for his service, too numerous to list. He was actively involved in Utah and national politics, including running for Utah Congress and serving as the Democratic National Committeeman. He had the honor of working alongside many brilliant and talented individuals over the years and enjoyed lasting friendships and associations.
Family and faith were paramount to Daryl. He and his wife, Helen, served as Host/Hostess at the Joseph Smith Memorial Building in SLC, then a full-time Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the California, San Diego Mission. This was truly a highlight for Daryl. He served in many Church Callings and was an inspired teacher and leader.
Daryl is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Helen; their children, Daryl, Jr (Laura), Paul (Mary Anne), Mark (Kristen), Margie (Brad) Pulsipher, 17 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and two older brothers, Emerson (Lyla) and Donald (Effie).
The family wishes to express their sincere gratitude to Brighton Hospice; in particular, Emily, Rashelle, and Amy, as well as the nurses, caregivers and staff at Cottonwood Creek Assisted Living.
Funeral Services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 14, 2015 at the East Mill Creek LDS Stake Center on 3103 East Craig Drive (3600 South), Salt Lake City, UT. A Viewing will be held at the church on Friday, February 13th from 6-8 p.m. and Saturday prior to services from 9:45-10:45 a.m. Interment at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

Recently, a very old Swingline stapler came into my possession. I looked at the bottom of it, and I saw this man's name written on the bottom, and decided to google it on a whim, and found this page. I live in the SLC area, so there's a fair degree of confidence this is the Daryl McCarty who owned it. The stapler is a Swingline model 333, with simulated wood and chrome trim.

Daryl McCarty was my 6th grade teacher at Magna Elementary the 1956-57 school year. I remember him as the first teacher to instill in me the notion that education was valuable and important, not just something to fill social time and be endured. I can report that he tops the list of primary education teachers I remember and appreciate most. I send my sincere condolences to all of his family, friends and loved ones.

Helen, Daryl Jr, and Paul, I remember your dad as a good friend and client. We solved many of the world's problems and State problems as we talked in my place of business in the Cottonwood Mall. I always respected and loved all of his advice and comments. God Bless! He will be missed. J Reed Thacker

After receiving the sad news about his passing this week, we have had the wonderful opportunity to review our memories -- and the tremendous accomplishments -- of our old friend, Dr. Daryl McCarty.
We are reminded of the scripture that reads, "By their works, ye shall know them." Daryl and Helen, your works are truly exceptional! What a beautiful,Christ-like example Daryl will continue to provide for those who knew him.
To all the extended family, our thoughts and prayers are with you ... until we meet again with Daryl on the other side.

It was a great honor to have Dr. McCarty as the executive director for UEA. I was in my early years of teaching and appreciated his leadership and direction for the profession. I always admired him and the stand he took for quality education in Utah. A great educator.

I was in Garfield grade school with Daryl. Each month when Tip Top Comics was sold at the drug store I bought it for 10 cents. After I read it Daryl would come to my house ( which was part of the town Library) and buy it for a nickel. I was glad to see my old friend had such a successful life. My sincere condolences to his family.

Mr. McCarty was my 5th grade teacher at Webster Elementary school. Mr McCarty was one the most encouraging, and caring teachers I ever had. I remember him patting my shoulder and telling me "you are a good student and a good person". He made me feel like there was nothing I could not do with a little hard work. He made my school year a great one, he made me feel that he always had time to help you. He had a great sence of humor, and I knew he loved his students and teaching. I later went on to be a teacher myself. When ever I read about his achievements in the paper I was very proud to have known him. Bless you all with having such a great man to lead your family. Thank you Mr. McCarty.
