Don Doxey Obituary

Don C. Doxey

08/13/1928 - 03/27/2023

Denver, CO-Artist, Teacher, Husband, Father and Grandfather passed away peacefully on March 27th. He was surrounded by family and he was loved deeply.

Don was born in Ogden, Utah to Estelle A and Clifford B Doxey. His bride was Claire Marie Jay. They married in 1950 and subsequently Don became a father to two daughters, Debra Dawn and Pamela.

He earned an Associates of Science degree from Weber College, BS and MFA degrees from University of Utah and was awarded an honorary PHD degree from Westminster College. He also attended the American Art School in NYC and worked in television for NBC Studios.

He served two years in the US Army during the Korean Conflict as a special agent with the Army's Counter Intelligence Corps.

In 1956 he was employed by the SLC School District as well as the SL Art Center and SLC county recreation department. In 1961 he found his true calling at Westminster College earning the rank of Full Professor. Although he officially retired after 33 years, he remained active as Professor Emeritus.

Don loved Westminster, its students and its faculty. His students loved him. He not only provided expert instruction but he always had hot coffee and donuts on those cold Utah mornings before class started. There were books to listen to while they worked, and of course, a soft sofa and chairs to relax in. There was a great deal of fellowship in Dons classes. There was a lot of love.

"What a great place to work", he often said.

Don was an extraordinary artist, a master still life painter. His paintings were rugged and his detail was impeccable. Each painting was deliberately thought out and told its own story. In 1971, he was awarded first place in the prestigious Benedictine Competition in NYC with a painting depicting a western motif, an antique saddle and cowboy hat. Shortly thereafter, he was invited by Mr. Edwin Barrie to become an artist member of Grand Central Galleries in NYC. He also exhibited with galleries in Chicago, Los Angeles, San Diego, Carmel, Dallas and Jackson Hole, WY. His most enduring gallery association was with Husberg Fine Art in Sedona and Scottsdale, AZ. He and the Husberg family became fast friends. He became a charter member of the National Western Artists organization and exhibited annually with them. His work has been featured in the articles of "Southwest Art", "Guns Magazine", "Art of the West" and in the PBS TV Documentary "Thieves of the Imagination". Surely his most gratifying painting was commissioned by the alumni of Westminster College. It was a large portrait of his closest colleague, Dr. Jay W Lees. It is currently on display in the campus theater building.

In 2002, Don was flattered to be recognized by the Springville Museum of Art as one of the most honored artists of Utah.

Don is survived by his family, Pamela (Robert), grand daughter, Hallie and his close friend, Dr Ron Brenning.

Preceded in death by his parents, Estelle and Clifford, his wife, Claire Marie, daughter, Debra, his sister, Joan Hadley (Bob), and brother Robert Doxey (Verne) of San Francisco.

Don was caring, gentle, thoughtful, intelligent and so kind to everyone he met. He is missed terribly.

The family would like to thank the staff and volunteers at Porter Hospice Residence for their kind and compassionate care of our dear dad during his final weeks of life. May God bless you.

I was a student of Don's at Westminster in 1985. I learned so much from him. He instilled the love of art in me, especially western art
I still have a beautiful drawing He gave me in class. I shall cherish it even more now. He was my mentor. I'm so sorry to hear of his passing. I'll always remember the advice he gave me.GOD BLESS Don

Don was my art instructor at Westminster College. His knowledge of art and his live demonstrations of the figure were incredible. After I graduate in 1975 I stayed in contact with him and was fortunate to be in included in an exhibition of his former students at Westminster. My major medium is watercolor and he would remark I have not idea how you work in this medium. His realism set the standard for my own work and I am greatly saddened by his passing.

From the very first steps I took as a young freshman onto the Westminster Campus, I was surrounded by the warm welcome from Don Doxey and his close friend, Jay Lees. I was on an arts scholarship and Don was my advisor. There are so many things to learn, about art, people and life and I don´t think I would have progressed into my adult life without the friendship and support from Don and his buddy, Jay. As we go out into out the world after college, those teachers we leave behind may have no idea as to the influence they had on your life. I´m fortunate to live in SLC and every time I visit the Westminster campus I make it a point to go look at the large painting Don did of Jay in his "native" habitat of the green room of Courage Theatre. We had to pass Jay as we climbed the stairs to the top of Converse Hall. If he needed something, extras, scenery paintings or whatever, Jay would ambush us before we made it to Don´s class. It was all good, kept us out of trouble. It will be part of my life forever.
I can always recognize one of Dan´s paintings when I´m out and about gallery hopping. No one could depict light on an object like he could. He taught us attention to detail, but I never was able to capture light like he did. I´m teaching art now myself and his teachings trickle into what I say to my students. My other art mentor, Harold "Pete" Petersen passed away in January. He was my high school art teacher and I´ve worked at his art center for the past 10 years. He knew Don and was glad that was my college experience in painting and drawing. I´m sad that both of my mentors are passed away now but they will live on in my heart and I hope the things they taught me can be passed down to my students.
Thanks to the family for their support of the artist, not always an easy job because we sometimes go left when everyone else turns right.

Don and Claire Doxey, Debra and Pam were our next door neighbors during my youth. The neighborhood kids played together a lot, night games like "No Bears Are Out Tonight", "Mother May I, etc. Don and Claire were wonderful neighbors and I had the pleasure of visiting in their home. Don was a friendly and welcoming man. He paid attention to people including me. As a boy I took an interest in golf and fashioned some clubs out of bamboo and wooden blocks. Don came over one day and gave me some real golf clubs he had but wasn't using. Boy, I was in heaven! I have enjoyed playing golf ever since. All of us in the neighborhood enjoyed associating with the Doxeys and appreciated Don's talent as an Artist and Teacher. A couple of other things I remember, Don had a power lawn mower that my brother and I envied as we had an old fashioned push mower that we worked hard to use. My bedroom window was next to Don and Claire's patio. They sometimes had parties there and I fell asleep many nights to the warm laughter. It's a fond memory. Don was a wonderful man and I appreciate his impact on my life and knowing him as I did. Rest Well Don.

Sending my deepest condolences to the family. Thank you for posting his obituary for us in Salt Lake. This is my tribute to Don. Such an amazing man.
.... I was so privileged to be trained as an artist under Don´s amazing talent and instruction. He was the highlight of my experience at Westminster College. Don retired the year I graduated, that was fitting. Don had a great sense of humor, he often played books on tape or the very old Mystery Theater series as we all painted. His studio always was a happy and comfortable place to be. He liked to tease the students and had a twinkle in his eye as he did. Any time the model didn´t show up he´d ask me to fill in. I wish I still had that art pad he drew some of those portraits, they got lost in a move many years ago. One thing that will never fade are my memories of him or everything he taught me as an artist. His wedding gift to me was a full collection of his favorite artist brushes. He called them his "secret weapon." Included with the brushes was a note telling me he expected me to make it as a painter. My next painting is dedicated to you Don! RIP, your long journey is done here. Thank you for everything!

I have so much love for Don. He was so kind, so supportive. He took me under his wing when I was still in high school, and mentored me through my first years at college. I´ll never forget our life talks and our art talks. He was a contributing factor in my decision to become an art instructor. His legacy is huge and runs deep in the community of students he influenced.

Don made a tremendous impact on my art and also my entire college experience. He was not only talented but truly cared for his students. Don will be truly missed, but because he was a teacher, he will live on in all of us! Thank you, Don. You are truly gifted and made a difference in my life and so many others.

Don Doxey was my advisor when I first attended Westminster College.
After i graduated, Don, Claire Marie and I became members of Jay Lees´
"Squat and Gobble" club, a group of Westminster faculty and staff, along with several of Jay´s friends who would go out to dinner and socialize.
Don was a great friend and the finest artist imaginable. I´m honored to have my name on a playbill in the background of Don´s portrait of Jay Lees. Farewell, dear friend.

Don was one of my instructors at Westminster in the mid '80's. I took an art history class from him, and never missed it. Not once. His knowledge was encyclopedic and his love of the subject pulled you in with the gravity of a shining star. I feel privileged to have been his student.
