Ernest Burnside Obituary

Ernest Burnside 1927 ~ 2006 Ernest Burnside returned to the loving arms of his Father in Heaven and the waiting arms of his earthly father and mother April 1, 2006. He was at his home with his wife, in Sandy. Ernest was born in Mt. Pleasant, Utah March 30, 1927 to John Mitchell and Sitha Burnside. When he was very young his family moved to Kenilworth, Utah where he attended schools in the Carbon School District. He was active in high school musicals and athletic programs. He was drafted near the end of the World War II and served his country proudly for 18 months in the Aleutian Is-lands. His father was killed in a mining accident and Ernest was discharged. He returned home and attended Carbon College where he lettered in athletics and participated in musical activities. He held a long-standing record in the broad jump. He graduated from Snow College where he was active in sports and music. He sang and loved Gilbert and Sullivan Operettas. While attending Snow College, he met his future wife, Joan Larsen, and four years later they were married in the Manti Temple April 13, 1951. Ernest worked nearly 40 years for the Safeway Stores, Inc., where he ended his career as the Distribution Center Manager. Ernest and Joan lived for a number of years in Magna, Utah, where their children were born and raised. They are Kathy Ann (Michael) Breeze, Robert Ernest (Shanna) Burnside, Ronald Larsen (Tamara) Burnside, and Janet Kay Barrett. They are the proud grandparents of 13 grandchildren, some of whom are married, and added seven more beautiful and caring granddaughters and grandsons. They have given him two great grandsons and two great granddaughters. Ernest was aware that his time left here on earth was ending, but his courage, patience, and faith were an example and testimony of manhood at its best. Ernest was a wonderful and caring husband, father, friend, and neighbor. His greatest pleasure was caring for his wife and family, a role he took very seriously. Ernest was an active member of the LDS Church and served in Sunday School, MIA, bishopric, and on the high council. He loved music and was an accomplished vocalist, chorister, and ballroom dancer. Ernest enjoyed working and fixing things. He could repair anything and never threw anything away. He enjoyed many hours working in his yard and taking care of everyone in the neighborhood. He was regarded as the person to call if you needed help. He was also known as the "candy man" to most of the children in the ward and neighborhood, where candy was always available. Funeral Services will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, April, 5, 2006 at the Sandy Utah East Stake, 9636 So. 17th East. Friends may call between 6:30-8:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 4, and at the church at 10-10:45 a.m. prior to the services Wednesday. Interment will be in the Fairview City Cemetery. Joan, Kathy, Bob, Ron & Janet,

I just heard about Ernie and felt so sick that I couldn't make it to the viewing or funeral. Your family has always been so dear to our family. We remember the fun times we had coming to your place and going to Bear Lake together. It's sad that after my mom died that we lost touch with you guys, but whenever I've seen any of you it brings right back the sense of family and friendship that we share. Know of my love to you all, especially you Joan. You've all been an inspiration to me, and to my brothers.

Love goes to you all.

Joan, I will never forget the time that Jenny Wakefield and I went to Richfield to assist you with the Tony presentations. Your husband was so sweet to bring us food and spoil us throughout the day. we loved him. Although we didn't know him well, we will miss him.

I will also never forget the coversation we had in the lounge when I told you of my husbands heart condition and you shared your husbands condition with me. It meant a lot to me that you were sympathetic with my situation even though your situation seemed so much worse.

You are a strong women who is very devoted to her family and friends. I admire you for that. I'm very sorry you have to endure such a difficult time in your life, but please know that you are in my thoughts and prayers.

Joan: May you have peace and the Lord's comfort during this time of mortal transition. I appreciate what brief moments I experienced Ernie's gentleness and humor as he would chauffeur you about the state and sneak candy bars to us on days we looked too serious. What fortune is ours when we take moments to touch as human beings, knowing our eternity is woven by the smallest meaningful seconds.

If his posterity is any statement as to his character, he was a gentle and loving man. I am a friend of his Grandson, Shane Breeze. Shane always spoke so highly of Ernest, I am sure that his memory will live on in his loving family and his amazing influence has shaped the beautiful people they have become.

In deepest sympathy~
