Howard Sharp Obituary

Howard Cannon Sharp
1925 ~ 2019
Howard Cannon Sharp was released from this world on September 8, 2019, encircled by his loving family. He will long be remembered for his love of family, adventurous spirit, kind service to others, and his sense of humor. Howard was born in Salt Lake City, Utah July 17, 1925, the son of Ira Bennion Sharp and Lois Cannon Sharp. In 1946, he married his sweetheart, Marjorie Taylor, in the Salt Lake Temple. He graduated from the University of Utah Medical School at the age of 22, and served his country in the Air Force. As an Obstetrician / Gynecologist, he delivered over 12,000 babies. He founded the first chronic pelvic pain clinic for women at the University of Utah in 1987, and worked tirelessly to help increase the quality of life for his patients.
When he had free time, he could be be found fly fishing or horseback riding up the Weber, playing tennis, skiing, boating in the "Gravid Goose", playing jazz piano by ear, reading, or traveling the world. If asked about how his day was going, he would likely reply: "Super deluxe, master-built, and fur-lined."
He had a great love of the gospel of Jesus Christ and had the opportunity to serve a humanitarian mission to Ekaterinburg, Russia with his wife Marjorie, and as mission president in San Bernardino, California for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was humbled to be called as a Stake Patriarch. He enjoyed serving as a counselor in the Salt Lake Temple Presidency and as Temple President in Palmyra, New York, where he learned a greater love for the Lord Jesus Christ.
He is survived by Marjorie, his long-time loving, eternal companion of 73 years, his sister, Dorotha Smart, his brother, Robert Sharp, and his seven children: Margie Rogers (Gary), Becky Hamilton (Dean), Elizabeth McCune (Mark, deceased), Kathy Parker (Jon), Rosemary Davis (Terry), Howard T. Sharp (Kristie), and Suzanne Moffitt (Ron), as well as 27 grandchildren and 34 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his sister, Mary Lois Wheatley and a grandson, Jonathon Sharp Parker. When asked, "How do you like having so many daughters?" He responded, "I like it so much, I specialized in them."
A viewing will be held Thursday, September 12th at Larkin Sunset Lawn, located at 2350 East, 1300 South from 6-8 pm. His funeral will be held Friday, September 13th at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints Monument Park Stake Center, located at 1320 South Wasatch Drive, at Noon, with a viewing at 10:30 am. Interment will be at the Salt Lake City Cemetery immediately following the funeral services. In lieu of flowers, please feel free to send a donation to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation or the International Pelvic Pain Society.

Dr. Sharp was my physician who helped me through my DES diagnosis. I think of him often as one of the comforting physicians in my life. He was always there for me.

I first met Dr Sharp when he was at the Bryner Clinic. A coworker referred me to him and I´ll always be grateful. We talked about him being the mission President in San Bernardino. He had an elder from my home stake in Maine. I felt cared for and trusted him with my life. He took care of me through 3 children and one miscarriage. He delivered my oldest and youngest. My second child was early and he happened to be vacationing at his cabin in the Uintahs. When I was in labor the last time, he jokingly referred to women who were louder than some others. He sang, "moaning Lisa, moaning Lisa". I loved his sense of humor and his kindness to me. I drove cross country as few months ago and stopped in Palmyra and walked around the Temple. I spoke with a worker there who happened to be his home teacher while he was serving there. He had some great stories. I´ve thought of him so much over the years. It was the fall of 1983 when I first met him and he cared for me until 1994. God bless you Dr. Sharp and may you Rest In Peace. I love you.

Amazing physician, even better man. I learned much from him: medically, socially, spiritually. Wonderful sense of humor. His patients loved him as did his colleagues. Sorry to have missed all of this, but we were out of town.

Dear Marge,

You and Howard have been such a big part of our life! We have had so much in common .... Living on the same street, sharing first names, both Howard's were doctors, both Howards had fathers who ran sheep, both loved to play tennis. What a great association we have had with your family! I will be making a donation in Howard's honor to the Huntsman Cancer.

Love,
Marge Haynes

Dear Marge and beautiful cousins,

What a man! What a family! And what a beautiful funeral!
You all did wonderfully. It is a delight to learn from you. We are grateful for you.
I have a lifetime of fond memories of you at the ranchriding horses, cabin church where both Marge and Howard always taught us so well, and just talking with each other. In High School I was appreciated being connected to the beautiful Sharp girls of East Highhelped me by just being related to you! Marge was my church leader and mentored me on how to be in a Relief Society
presidency at the U. Marge, you have taught me much through the years and I love you for it.
When Karl and I married, Howard gave us wise counsel about how he and Marge achieved a happy marriage. That has shaped many of our habits. Howard delivered our twinsa complicated birth because the first one was breach. Marge, you and Howard have made a big impact on me my entire life-- by word and example. And your influence has traveled to my children and grandchildren. You have touched so many lives that have the touched many lives. What a force for good you both have been in this world. We are so grateful for you all and pray God's greatest peace and blessings to be with you. We are at you disposal any time and we hope that sometime we could possibly be of assistance to you.
Much love,
Amy and Karl White

I served as President Sharp's secretary in the California San Bernardino Mission for seven months and will forever be grateful for the great influence, example and mentor he was to me. His tremendous sense of humor kept all of us in the office positive and upbeat, while his spiritual teachings kept us centered on what was really important. He and Sister Sharp are truly "super deluxe, master-built and fur-lined!"

We have great gratitude for Howard Sharp for he was the wonderful physician who delivered our children. He went the extra mile by coming to our home while VeeDrienne was on bed rest during one of her six pregnancies. Without his wisdom, care and caution neither she or our son, who was born at 29 weeks, would have lived. Our family is forever thankful for his skill and wisdom. We send our sincere appreciation and condolences.

Oh the memories of President and Sister Sharp as we served in the Palmyra temple in 2006. One of my favorites is that he constantly referred to the temple "patrons" as "patients." Obviously a carry-over from his medical practice. Our love goes out to his dear eternal companion, Marjorie, whom we love so much. Sandy and Bob Butler

Elder Sharp was a wonderful man. I knew him on my mission in Russia. I was in their district for a while and loved learning from both of them. I am sad to see him leave his family but happy his ministry her on earth has finished. He was such a good friend to me and I often tell the stories he told us more than 20+ years ago.

This good man delivered several of our babies, beginning with our introduction to him while we were in law school. He was highly recommended by friends who were in medical school. He became not only a trusted physician but a loyal friend. Thank you for sharing your wonderful father with so many of us.

I had the blessing of serving as a missionary when Howard and Marjorie were serving in San Bernardino. Next to my father, President Sharp was the most influential man in my life. He was such a wonderful man. His sense of humor kept the missionary life bright and enjoyable. I loved getting to know the whole family while serving as an assistant. Elizabeth, President Sharps daughter used to refer to me as Winston, after their doberman pincer. My love to Marjorie and all the family members. Mike Harker

President Sharp was a positive influence in my life as my Mission President in San Bernardino. Young men and women learn leadership from those that set a proper example. President and Sister Sharp are wonderful examples.
