Jerry Riding Obituary

Jerry Russell Riding returned to his loving Heavenly Father on January 11, 2017. He was born September 28, 1938 to John Aurelius Riding and Cecial May King in Salt Lake City, Utah. He married his high-school sweetheart, Louise Ruth Warren, on November 15, 1956 in the Salt Lake Temple. During their 58 years of marriage their lives were blessed with four wonderful sons, their wives, many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Jerry was well educated and worked hard at acquiring knowledge. He attended Utah State University and graduated with a degree in chemistry and mathematics in 1962. His library is large and varied, and he enjoyed reading and searching for nuggets of knowledge and wisdom that he liked to then share with others. He was a gifted leader who enjoyed the support of friends and neighbors over decades of dedicated church service in his many church assignments. He served for many years as the bishop of his ward, as a high councilman, a high priest group leader, and many other assignments. He was blessed to serve with many other dedicated servants in these assignments and he treasured those associations.
He spent his childhood in many different places as his family moved for employment, and he spoke especially fondly of living near Flathead Lake in Montana. The family settled in a house in Salem, Utah when Jerry was 14, and he attended junior high and high school there. Salem held a special place in his heart always and he enjoyed spending time there.
Family and friends were most important in his life. He is survived by his four sons, Dennis (Ann), Rich (Holly), James (Christine), and Ronald. Jerry had a great love for his 16 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 14, 2017 at 11:00am at the Garden Heights North Ward, 2220 East Fisher Lane (2935 South), Salt Lake City. Friends and family can visit Friday evening 6:00-8:00pm at the Holbrook Mortuary, 3251 South 2300 East, and at the church Saturday morning 9:30-10:30am prior to the service. Interment will follow at the Salem City Cemetery. Guestbook to post messages and tributes for the family is available at: www.HolbrookMortuary.com

I was stunned to hear about Jerry's passing! I spoke with him by phone about a week ago, and found he was going to a doctor in American Fork and hoped to have the help he needed. I found out only today (the day of the funeral) from my son in Ohio that he had passed. I am so sorry I didn't read the obituaries to know of his death! I surely would have been in attendance at the funeral. Jerry and Louise were dear friends for years. I have missed Louise, and I will miss Jerry and his visits. Love to all of the family.

My thoughts and prayers go out to all of you. I know Drake will miss him a lot. I am very thankful I was able to know both your parents through sharing a grandson. Love to you all,Cindy Larson
