Linda Mariotti Obituary

Linda Dixon Mariotti
1948 ~ 2019
Linda Kay Dixon Mariotti, 71, our beloved mother, daughter, grandmother and sister, of Salt Lake City, Utah, passed away on Friday, November 8th, 2019. Linda died peacefully in her home, surrounded by her family, after a valiant 11 month battle with pancreatic cancer.
Linda was born on June 30, 1948, in Provo, Utah, to Melvin R. Dixon and Carol Collard Dixon. She attended East High School in Salt Lake City, graduated with a Bachelor's degree in English from The University of Utah, and later studied at the University of California, Berkeley and College of Notre Dame to earn her Master's degree.
Linda began her 50 year career in education as a junior high English teacher in San Francisco, California. It was there she met and married Francesco Mariotti, to whom she was later sealed in the Salt Lake City Temple. They were married for 27 years. Linda and Francesco had two daughters with whom they later moved to Brussels, Belgium, and eventually settled in Utah.
Once in Utah, Linda continued to teach junior high English, though she quickly transitioned to school district positions, junior high and high school administration, and eventually became the third female assistant superintendent of Granite School District - the position in which she was serving at the time of her death. Beyond her family, Linda was most passionate about her career and the education of all children. She had plans of retiring & working in advocacy for refugees.
Fluent in both French and Italian, Linda traveled the globe for both personal and professional pursuits. She relished learning about local cuisine and cultures; a gourmet cook, she derived tremendous joy from cooking for those she loved. A meal at Linda's table was always exquisite.
Linda was a lifelong patron of the arts and a season ticket holder of local theatre which she enjoyed with her mother and sisters.
Service in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints was a responsibility Linda enjoyed tremendously. She served in all auxiliaries in the ward and stake level. A unique calling that had a profound impact on Linda was her four years teaching religion to incarcerated youth. She considered this a choice calling in her life.
Linda treasured nothing more than family. She impressed upon her two daughters the value of education, culture, family, and good food. Her eight grandchildren were her greatest pride and joy. Gram dates, cousins club, skydiving, sleepovers and Sunday dinners were all her trademark ways of spending time with them and showing her love. "Gram" never missed a game, performance, presentation or milestone. Her grandchildren adore her and her impact on them is profound.
She is survived by her two daughters, Sarah (Shane) Cullimore, Mia, Jackson, Eli, Ben, Amanda (Brandon) Calton, Max, Libby, Isabel, Tallulah, her mother, Carol Dixon, and her siblings, Susan (Phil) Clinger, Debbie Dixon, David (Nancy) Dixon, Amy Dixon (Mark Grandstaff), and Emily Masadah (Hawk).
Funeral Services will be held in her honor at 11 AM on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the South Holladay Stake Center, 1830 East 6400 South, Murray, Utah. A viewing will be held prior to services at the same location beginning at 9 AM. In lieu of flowers, Linda would love donations made to the Linda Dixon Mariotti Scholarship, Granite Education Foundation, https://granitekids.charityproud.org/Donate/Index/4896, 385-646-KIDS(5437)

Linda was my hero. She was a person you could be open and frank with. She always found the good in people and situations. Linda was that rare person who made you feel valued and an important friend. She knew how to do hard things with grace, dignity, and the knowledge that things would work out for the best good of students. Linda's influence will continue. May your family be comforted with the knowledge that you all will be reunited in eternity.

Linda was always such a gracious beautiful lady. She was an advocate for all in her position at Granite School District. Many times I watched her quietly do acts of kindness to so many. What a great example of unconditional love.
I hope your family will have peace and comfort as well as sweet memories to fill your hearts in the days ahead.

Dear Dixon Family:

I learned today of dear Linda's passing. My heart is so very sad. She was a classic in so many ways. She achieved so much in her life and was so willing to share her many gifts and talents with others. She made such a contribution in the field of education. I had the pleasure of rubbing shoulders with her often and with each encounter, I always left our conversations uplifted, enlightened and encouraged. She was a beautiful, charming, intelligent woman. Friends, family and colleagues will miss her dearly. The world lost a great example and role model. She always had a special place in my heart and she will always be my mentor.

with love,
Sharlene N. Linford

I express my deepest sympathies to Linda's family. Linda was a tremendous advocate for excellence in education, and was someone you could always count on to champion opportunity and achievement for every student. I will always be grateful for Linda's kindness over the past few months. She began her treatment at about the same time my dad began his treatment for lung cancer, and we exchanged several texts offering one another encouragement and hope. Linda faced this trial with grace and dignity, and I'm sure she was an inspiration to all who knew her.

Dewar Amanda and family, I'm so sorry about the loss of your precious mother and gram. I loved my association with Linda for over 20 years as I worked with Granite District teachers in many capacities. Linda was passionate about quality education and was so supportive of exemplary instructional practices. She was a driving force for good, providing instructional and motivational support for principals and teachers to live their best teaching lives to then impact the lives of the students they teach. She was a class act, and inspired leader, a true professional, and a lot of fun. Her influence will live on in the countless lives she touched. May you feel peace and comfort at this profoundly difficult separation. She will continue to influence your lives, no doubt. Love to you.

Linda will be greatly missed. A few months ago I needed to make a decision and was having a little difficulty deciding what to do. She was aware of the situation and took the time to seek me out individually and tell me to "Just be a father." I will always remember her for her passion for education along with the clarity and vision that she brought to everything she did.

Linda was a profound influencer and supporter in the education realm. She will be missed. Her inspiring messages and willingness to fight for what is best for students will forever be remembered.

I regret that i will not be able to pay my respects for Linda the day of here funeral. Linda was one of the most respected administrators that I had the opportunity to work with. She was bright, progressive and a joy to be around. She had a great sense of humor and the ability to see issues before they developed and solve them quickly and effectively. GSD will miss her presence along with any one who was blessed to know her.

I was stunned to hear of my childhood friends passing. Word can't express how saddened I am. So many memories flood my heart in this moment. We were able to reconnect when I moved back to Salt Lake for a few years. The Dixon's were a huge part on my life. I'll always look back on those years with joy and extreme happiness My prayers are with her family. Linda was an amazing woman

There was no one better to work for then Linda. She made you feel like you could do nothing wrong even on a bad day. I worked for Linda as her Counseling Secretary at Olympus Junior and she was a beautiful lady inside and out. Even though she was our Principal, she never made you feel less important.
Wishing her family tender mercies at this time. May love be sent to you all week and in the weeks to come. ❤❤

Who couldn't but love this lady. Linda was a breath of fresh air at Bonneville Jr. High when she received her first administrative assignment as my assistant principal in my first year as Principal. She was loved by teachers, staff and students for her enthusiasm, care and fairness. She was with me only one year but left an indelible mark on me and we remained good friends from then on. I knew she had pancreatic cancer and it saddened me. It was still a shock when I learned of her passing. I will greatly miss her warm smiles and friendly hugs. Rest In Peace great lady!
