Marian Elizabeth Hathaway Vanderlip

1917 - 2018

Our mother was a kind, loving, and active woman, a good bridge player, an avid naturalist, and, sometimes, just a bit stubborn (how else can one live to be 100?)
Marian was born on Nov. 23, 1917 to Samuel Hathaway and Margaret Bundy. Mother grew up on a farm in upstate New York, the youngest of four children and as part of the small community of Cannonsville, New York. As the youngest on the farm it was her lot to milk the cows very early every morning and every afternoon, a fact that she never let her own children forget. Marian attended the State University of New York at Delhi in the 1930's and married her childhood sweetheart, Leo Guy Vanderlip, the day before the attack on Pearl Harbor. After the war Leo and Marian settled in the Binghamton, New York area, where Leo worked for IBM and where they raised their two daughters, Candace Bull (Michael) and Deborah Grabber (Peter S.).
Marian and Leo lived on Oak Island in North Carolina in retirement. After Leo died in 1985, Marian moved to Salt Lake City where Candace lived with her family. Marian quickly became active as a docent at Red Butte Gardens, as a member of the First United Methodist Church in Salt Lake, and hiking and camping with her family.
Marian is survived by both of her daughters, four grandchildren, Frederic, Christopher, Arthur, Daniel, and two great grandchildren, Jade and Leo; she loved them all dearly and they adored their grandma.
Candace and Deborah would like to give special thanks to mother's care givers for the past three years of her life they are Lorin Bishop, Teresa Covington, Xanie, Diane, Mark, Cole and CNS Hospice.
In lieu of flowers please be mindful of riparian areas and frog habitats.
Funeral services will take place Thursday, February 8, at 4:00 p.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Salt Lake City. Reception will follow at the Bull residence, 245 N. Vine Street in Salt Lake City, 84103. 801-671-5167.
