Sherma Johnson Obituary

Sherma M. Johnson 1925 ~ 2004  Sherma M. Johnson, 79, died September 1, 2004 after a courageous battle with cancer. She was born April 7, 1925 in Nephi, Utah, the daughter of Martin Wilford Mangelson and Margit Anette Christensen. She married Grant La Mar on August 7, 1947 in the Logan LDS Temple.  Sherma graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City. She earned her Bachelor's and Master's Degrees at the University of Utah, and completed her certification as a Dietician at the University of Oregon. Sherma worked as a dietician for many years at Salt Lake hospitals and nursing homes. She began the Salt Lake Meals on Wheels program, delivering the first meals from the back seat of her car. Sherma later studied Cytotechnology at Holy Cross Hospital and became a cytologist as well. Sherma developed many avocations and hobbies. She enjoyed canning and baking. She learned to play the guitar. She especially loved creating and nurturing bonsai plants, was secretary of the Bonsai Club of Utah for many years, and loved antiques. Sherma was a member of the Brookshire (Grant 7th) Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Her family would like to thank her ward members for kindness over many years. They would also like to thank all of the medical professionals that cared for her throughout her illness. She was preceded in death by her parents; her two sisters, Helen M. Christensen and Camille M. Fife; her brother, Louis Mangelson; and her two daughters, Irene Ralay Johnson and Katherine Annette Johnson. She is survived by her sons, Martin Christen Johnson of Salt Lake City, and Sarun Frederick Johnson (Zina) of Provo, Utah; six grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, September 7 at 1 p.m. at the Brookshire Ward Chapel, 3487 South 1300 East, Salt Lake City. A viewing will precede the services at the chapel, from 11:00 a.m.-12:30 p.m. Interment will be in the Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park.

We are deeply saddened to know of Sherma's death. We send our love to Martin, Sarun and Zina, and all the Grandchildren.

We are confident that Sherma now finds joy in her reunion with Irene and Katherine.
