Terrell Ewing Obituary

Terrell Wayne Ewing Jr. 1960 ~2007 Our hero, Terrell Wayne Ewing Jr., 46, passed away March 22, 2007 in Orem, Utah from complications due to his courageous battle with Huntington's disease. Terrell was born July 2, 1960 in San Diego, California to Terrell Wayne Ewing Sr. and Dorothy Elizabeth McColley. Terrell was raised in Whittier, California. While still a teenager, he moved to San Antonio, Texas and graduated from MacArther High School. Only 18 months after joining The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he faithfully served a two-year mission in Orsono, Chile. He graduated with his Associates Degree from Ricks College in Rexburg, Idaho then later graduated with a BA Degree in American Studies from Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. California is where he found his love for baseball. He became an excellent player and played through high school and college. In Texas he embraced what he considered his greatest gift, the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Then in Utah Terrell found and married his eternal sweetheart, Shauna Poulos, in the Manti Temple une 25, 1987. Later their circle was complete when they were blessed with two spectacular children. Their marriage has been one of love and deep commitment and they have cherished a 20-year romance. As an active member of the LDS church, he served in many stake and ward positions. He enjoyed teaching and sharing his testimony. Terrell truly loved all people. He had a hug for everyone and gave freely of his time and talents. His family was his greatest joy and his presence will be greatly missed. Terrell is survived by his wife, Shauna; daughter, Melissa; and son, Steven. He is also survived by his mother; brothers, David, Rory, and Vincent (Veronica) Ewing; a sister, Velina (Joseph) Rodriguez; and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Friday, March 30, 2007 at the Sharon 5th Ward chapel, 545 South 800 East, Orem, Utah. A viewing will be held one hour prior to the service and from 6-8 p.m. Thursday, March 29th at the same location. Interment at Orem City Cemetery. Shauna, I am so terribly sorry for your loss. Meeting you while in Utah in 2003 was such an inspiration to me...and then for you to feel comfortable enough to bring us into your home to meet your family...this was an even bigger inspiration. The love that you shared with your husband is one in a million. You gave your all to him and he was so lucky to have you and to be loved by you. Thank you for allowing us to meet your family and for allowing us to put your wedding book together for you. To be able to share that with you was an amazing experience! I hope that you and Terrell were able to enjoy that wedding album together, time and time again.

You and your children are in my thoughts and prayers during your time of grief and loss. Hugs to you all.

Dearest Shauna, Missy, and Steven,

I'm not sure if you remember me or not. I met Terrell in January of 1985, when he and I went through 'basic training' at the Utah State Developmental Center. He taught me to seek the good in people, rather than the negative. After training, I was blessed to be assigned to the same building as he was. We spent more than a year working together on the night shift. When things would get slow and we'd start drifting off, Terrell would start something that would make us laugh and keep us awake until quitting time.

He used to tell me, Shauna, that he was in search of the 'Perfect 10' in a wife. She had to score a 10 spiritually, physically, emotionally, and physically. I told him he might stay single for the rest of his life, if he didn't lower his expectations. Then, he met you. It was obvious, immediately, that you were his '10,' in all categories. He is a very blessed man to have you as his eternal partner.

I used to go to the ball park to watch him play, because I just couldn't imagine anyone as good looking as he, sliding face-first, into a base. Not only did he do it, but he did it very well and enjoyed getting dirty in the process.

I think we can all admit freely, that he lived life to its fullest, even with his limitations. In doing so, he set an example for all of us to follow. He gave freely of his unconditional love. Anyone lucky enough to be called friend, could count on receiving a bear hug from him. It's been years since I've seen him, but, oh, how I miss those hugs. They were the highlight of my nightshifts and whenever I had the pleasure of seeing him again.

I know, without a doubt, that he is in the presence of God and His Son. He lives on in that special place, we all hope to get to some day. He is free of his mortal limitations and sliding face-first into home plate to win for the team.

May you find comfort in knowing that as he sails away from you and disappears over the horizon, others having already passed over, are anxiously awaiting his arrival.

Peace and comfort be with you always.

I love you, Tee-WEe!

AloHowdy, This was the greeting Terrell and I developed when we realized Texan's and Hawaiian's have so much in common. "Bless your BIG HEART" is a phrase we used when we noticed someone giving charity to another.

I was blessed to be one of Terrell's roommates. He taught me many Christ-like attributes. Two I will always cherish is what is a humble prayer and to not speak unkind words about anyone. I will miss his smile and his kind words.

Shawna we love your family. We are all your Ohana (family). Please let us bless your lives as your family blessed ours. Let us know how we can be of service to you.

Shauna, Melissa and Steven,
I was blessed to have known Terrell and was always humbled by his courageous and strong spirit. I have often thought of your family through the years since I moved from the Orem Ward that I met you in. Shauna, I will always remember the first time I met you and Terrell. You were holding hands, taking a walk through the neighborhood. I remember your happiness and the glow on both of your faces. You are such a wonderful example of grace, strength and steadfastness in this unpredictable world. Your example has touched me very much. I know Terrell is watching over you, Melissa and Steven. God Bless you and your family at this time. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Dear Shauna & family,

I was blessed to know TWE (as we lovingly called him) in San Antonio, Texas when he learned about and accepted the Gospel. Mick Webb brought him into our lives and we all immediately loved TWE. He was always cheerful, loving and positive and tried to help others to be as well. I remember days that were made happier just because TWE was there. We had a great group of friends at MacArthur High School with many happy memories together. Another place I can still see TWE in my memory is in early morning Seminary with great instructors like Edie Rockwood. Those mornings were made even better because of TWE's influence. I'm grateful to have had his example to follow and most of all grateful to have known him! My biggest regret now is that I didn't keep in touch with you both to know the health struggles you were dealing with. I wish I could have been there to love and support you! Please know my thoughts and prayers are with you at this time and through the difficult upcoming years as you miss your sweet husband & father.

With much love,
Jane Holmgren Brown

Shauna, bless you both. What great memories we have of T and his great love of so many things -- Texas, softball (baseball), his "blessing hog" roommates, you, his little babies (Melissa and Steve) and more importantly the Lord. You have been so blessed and ARE such a blessing / strength to those around you. It is a blessing from the Lord to consider you and T a FRIEND.

Liz will be at the viewing on Thursday night. Kent will try to make it to the funeral on Friday.

Dear Shauna, Melissa and Steven, I have been so blessed by knowing your sweet family! I have fond memories of spending time in your home entertaining Terrell with John Denver songs on the guitar, reading the scriptures, watching the devotional on KBYU and taking trips around the neighborhood with Hershey. Terrell loved to get out when he could. Thank you Shauna for your example. You have shown us all how to rely on the Lord for strength. You are such an example of love and devotion! We love you and are thinking of you all at this time.

Hello, you don't know me but I share your grief at the lose of yet another valiant battle against Huntingtons being lost. I lost the last of four cherished spirits on the 11th of this month. Please know that my heart goes out to you and your family at this brutal loss. Be assured that much is being done to stop the progression of the silent killer. I know that I have at least one more to watch suffer in the next few years, however, we have hope in the new medicines that are in phase III of fda approval. Please look at this and see what you think. I am sorry that you ahve felt this loss, but with little ones to watch for now you may need this as I do also,

Clinical Trials: The Big Time Delay
So with all this activity, what is the biggest time delay in getting a treatment to HD patients? Two words: clinical trials. If a drug or other treatment, like RNA interference or stem cell therapy, is new and not already approved by the FDA, then a series of controlled clinical trials needs to be run to determine the safety and efficacy of the treatment before the FDA approves it to be marketed in the U.S. Normally this is a three phase process extending over a period of several years and involving hundreds or thousands of patients. Clinical trials are extremely expensive as well. Following these trials, a new drug application (NDA) needs to filed with the FDA. Then the FDA reviews it in a process averaging 18 months or so before a final decision is made concerning approval.

The Possible Positive Wildcard Cure
The one big wildcard at the meeting was a compound made by Kyowa Pharmaceuticals, called KW-6002. It is in a class of compounds known as adenosine A2A receptor antagonists. These receptors are concentrated on the medium spiny neurons that are affected by HD. Recently the A2A receptor has been identified as being a potential target for an HD treatment, and KW-6002 has shown positive results in the high throughput HD screening tests mentioned earlier. CHDI is planning further tests of KW-6002 in the next year.
So why is this compound a possible positive wildcard? It’s because the compound is already in Phase III clinical trials to treat Parkinson’s Disease. I contacted the company and they told me that they plan to file an NDA with the FDA later in 2007 for use in treating Parkinson’s. If all goes well, they could see FDA approval of their drug by sometime in 2009. At that point, if animal model testing of KW-6002 in HD is also positive, then this may give individual neurologists the confidence to prescribe it for treating HD, even if it hasn’t been formally approved for that use.

God bless and keep you,
A.O.

I will never forget Terrell!!

Several years ago, Terrell and I were in the same BYU ward and became very good friends. We would go run in the early mornings. It was nice having someone to run with.

I remember Terrell as a person who made people feel good about themselves and who always had only kind words about others.

I wish that Terrell and his family did not have to face this disease, however, I can only imagine that the Lord knew that this was something Terrell and Shauna, because of the fantastic people they are, could positively handle.

I can only suppose that Terrell has already been in his Savior's arms and that the Savior is pleased with the type of life he led. Shauna, someday, you too, will be in your Savior's arms as he tells you "Well done, thou good and faithful servant".

Terrell was a great example and positively affected all those who he came in contact with. I am a better person today for having known Terrell.
