ST. GEORGE, UT - Walter Roy Sutter, 77, died Sept. 9, 2002 in St. George, Utah. He was born Dec. 11, 1925 in Waseca, MN to Myrtise Eleanor Mattson and Roy Robert Roland Sutter. He married his eternal companion Shirley Joan Walley of Racine, Wisconsin on October 1, 1947 in the Salt Lake Temple for time and all eternity.
He was raised in Minnesota by his grandparents after the loss of his mother at the age of two. Dad was a hard worker all his life. At the early age of eight years he learned to run a team of horses and a plow. He performed routine duties of farm labor, operated farm tractor in plowing, cultivating and harrowing for crops of corn, oats and barley. He would make minor repairs to farm machinery. He also fed and cared for livestock. He worked as a sales clerk at Buffums Carpet and Flooring and also J.I. Case of Racine, WI in the gear lab as an inspector. He retired from J.I. Case in February 1987 and he and his beloved wife moved to St. George, UT. Dad was a dedicated member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He was married only six months when he received his call to serve a two year mission to the Toronto, Canada mission leaving his bride behind. He has served diligently in the following callings: Counselor in the Racine Branch presidency, Chicago Stake; set apart as one of the presidents in the 436th quorum of Seventy, in Milwaukee; first counselor in bishopric in the Racine Ward, Milwaukee Stake; sustained as a first counselor in a new bishopric in the Racine ward; served as a assistant in the stake Sunday School under four different presidents of the Milwaukee, Wisconsin Stake; called as president of the Milwaukee Stake Sunday school presidency and sustained as an alternate high councilman, Milwaukee Stake; sustained as a member of the high counsel; sustained as First counselor in the Kenosha ward; sustained as First counselor in the Kenosha ward of the Chicago Stake; and sustained as high councilman of the Milwaukee Stake serving until he retired to St. George. When he came to St. George he served in the Dixie Downs (Snow Canyon) Stake in mission presidency and was a High Priest Group Leader. He loved the temple and up to a year ago he would go three or four times a week. It was difficult for him not to be able to return when he became so ill. He was proud to serve his country. He served in the Marine Corps in Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, and Palau I slands. He is survived by his daughter, Mary Sutter (David) Grange; brother and sisters-in-law, Vivian (Elmer) Torgerson of Bloomington, IN and Patricia Werner of St. George; his brother, Charles "Pete" Sutter; Patricia Werner of St. George, UT; Doris Walley of Sturtevant, WI; nieces, Donna McMarrow, Las Vegas, NV; Laurie (Jerry) Castillo of Orem, UT and several other nieces and nephews. He so loved his grandchildren, Lisa, Sarah Pickard and Jared and Kathryn Grange. Funeral services will be Saturday, September 14, 11 a.m., Snow Canyon LDS 6th Ward Chapel, 1155 N. 1400 W., St. George. Visitations will be held Friday, 6-8 p.m., Metcalf Mortuary and Saturday, 9:30-10:45 a.m., prior to services at the Chapel.To plant trees in memory, please visit the Sympathy Store.
