When she was a small child the family moved to Rialto California and later to the base of Blue Mountain in Highgrove, now Grand Terrace California. Mary attended Rialto schools and upon graduating from high school attended business college after which she went to work for the Agricultural Adjustment Administration in Riverside as a secretary. Later she worked for the Tariff Commission in Washington DC. She returned home due to her father's illness just prior to World War II. During World War II she was secretary for the executive officer of the Mira Loma Quartermaster Depot in charge of sending supplies to troops in the pacific theater and to the Japanese relocation camps in the southwestern United States. After the war she attended UCLA. Her next job was working as a secretary at the Citrus Experiment Station in Riverside. There she met her husband-to-be Chalmer Dean McCarty, they were married in August 1947 at the Asistencia Mission in Redlands California. After which they spent two years in Berkeley while he finished his education which had been interrupted by WWII. While there she worked as a secretary in the Entomology Department on the UC Berkeley Campus. Returning to Riverside she again worked at the Citrus Experiment Station and when the University of California Riverside was started she became the secretary for the first chancellor. Later she resigned to raise her family. The family moved to Wrightwood and then to Apple Valley California and after her son was grown she finished her working career with Reserve Gas and Oil and Apple Valley Ranchos. She loved gardening and was president of the Apple Valley Garden Club for two terms. Around her home she had planted 1100 daffodil bulbs. She leaves behind her husband of 64 years and 3 months, one son Kenneth Dean McCarty MD, daughter-in-law Bushra McCarty, and one grandson Zachary Dean McCarty. I have known Mary since I was around 7 years old about 34 years now, when my parents and I moved to Apple Valley. The McCarty's were our neighbors for many years. She was such a wonderful loving and thoughtful person. I will miss you very much Mary God bless you.

I remember Mary from my earliest years - she and Dean had been close friends with my parents for many years. She always radiated optimism and enthusiasm, and was absolutely loyal to her friends. My parents treasured her friendship, and we all admired her unwavering kindness and support.

I fondly remember Mary from Cactus Wren Garden Club. I spent many hours in her home as we worked on the newsletter for the organization. She will be missed!
