Fred Sheeks Obituary

Fred Sheeks

Grimes

Fred Sheeks was born July 27, 1931 in Mystic, Iowa. He left this life to be with our Heavenly Father on August 20, 2011, at Mercy Hospice in Johnston.

Fred is survived by his wife of 60 years, Betty Sheeks, his daughter Jaye (Tom) Good, sons Jeff (Cindy) Sheeks, Dennis (Aundra) Shields, Mike (Susan) Sheeks, ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren, and brothers Robert (Virginia) Sheeks and Jerry (Linda) Sheeks.

Fred was preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Iona Sheeks, brothers Ed and Morris Sheeks, sisters Kitty Bushbaum and Dixie Phillips, and infant twin siblings June and Junior Sheeks.

Fred worked for the State of Iowa for 51 years at Camp Dodge as a heavy equipment operator as well as being instrumental in maintaining the Camp Dodge Pool. He was a member of Ankeny Church of Christ.

He lived an active life. Fred enjoyed working outside, lifting weights, wood-working, riding motorcycles, and spending time with his family. He was a veteran of the Korean War and also boxed in the Army. He was an extraordinary fast-pitch softball pitcher in the 1950's and 60's. In addition he was known for his volunteerism with the Johnston School District. However, he was most proud of his family.

A private family service was held on Tuesday, August 23rd at the Camp Dodge Chapel. A Celebration of Life will be held to honor Fred on Thursday August 25th. The family will greet guests from 4 to 8 p.m. at Ankeny Church of Christ, 224 SW 3rd Street, Ankeny, IA.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Hospice in Johnston or the Ankeny Church of Christ.

I had the honor to work with Fred for eleven years at camp dodge. He taught me how to operate heavy equipment and was very knowledgeable. He would give you the shirt off his back. He will be missed but always remembered. Betty sorry for your loss our prayers are with you and your family.

I had the priviledge of living next door and working with Fred for many years at Camp Dodge. He was a great neighbor always willing to lend a hand and a super coworker. He taught me how to operate some heavy equipment and we worked on alot of jobs together. He never had a bad word to say about someone and always had a positive attitude. He will greatly missed. My condolences to Betty and the family. You are in our thoughts and prayers.

Betty and Family, We were so saddened to hear of Fred's passing. He was a wonderful and well respected man. My brothers have fond memories of playing ball and going fishing with him. It never seemed to take much of a reason to start up a ball game. He was a good friend to all the kids within the "Camp Dodge Family". From the entire Moss Family to your family, we wish you peace and comfort.
