Harry Forest Byrd, 90, died on Thursday, November 28, 2013, at Wesley Acres in Des Moines. The family will receive friends from 2 - 4 p.m. Sunday, December 1, at Iles-Westover Chapel. Funeral services and burial will take place in Omak, WA at a later date.

Harry was born on February 17, 1923, in Des Moines, to Harry and Virgil (Winburn) Byrd, graduated from North High School and served in the U.S. Navy as a submariner during WWII. He was employed with Pacific Northwest Bell Telephone Company for 38 years, retiring in 1983. Harry was a member of the Elks Club and Masonic Lodge.

Harry is survived by his wife Virginia, children Gordon (Joan) Byrd of FL and Debra (Brent) Mundinger of WA; step sons Larry (Jane) Ferguson of Altoona, Gregory (Cheryl) Ferguson of Pella, and Tom (Julann) Ferguson of Wheaton, IL; two granddaughters, Jordan and Lauren; seven step-grandchildren and 12 step great-grandchildren. Harry was preceded in death by his parents and his first wife, Vanessa.

On behalf of the United States Submarine Veterans (USSVI), we offer our sincere condolences to Virginia, Gordon, Debra, Larry, Gregory, and Tom, and all of Harry's family and friends in your loss and sorrow. May God whisper peace into your hearts and comfort and heal them. We are grateful for Harry's service to our country in the U.S. Submarine Service during WWII on the USS Pompon SS-267, on which he made War Patrols 5 and 6. He also served on the USS Tinosa SS-283 during WWII. To our “Brother of the Dolphin” … "Sailor, rest your oar. We have the watch. May you rest in peace and may God bless your loved ones who remain. Thank you for your service to our country."
