James Richard Kline was born on March 25, 1939 in Waterloo, Iowa to Robert L. and Helen (McElroy) Kline.

He grew up in Waterloo, Iowa and graduated from West High and then continued his education at the University of Northern Iowa with a degree in Speech Pathology. He was united in marriage to Karen Summy on November 30, 1963 at the United Methodist Church in Yale, Iowa.
In his younger years, Jim worked in various jobs including U.S. Forestry Service in Bovill, ID, John Deere Works in Waterloo, IA and the YMCA at Phantom Lake in Mukwonago, WI.
