Janis Winter Obituary
Ankeny - Janis Faye Winter, 66, passed away Thursday, August 16, 2018, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Memorial services will take place at a future date. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Girl Scouts of America in memory of Janis.
Janis was born December 12, 1951, to William and Faye (Meyers) Winter. She graduated from Creston High School in 1969 and went on to attend South Western Community College and Peru State College to get her Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education. She went on to attend Western Sydney University where she attained her Master's Degree in Astronomy. Janis was an educator, most recently employed at DMACC in Ankeny. She retired in 2014.
Janis was a member of the Des Moines Astronomical Society, serving as president for several years. She also contributed to the Girl Scouts of America. Janis enjoyed listening to music, especially Simon and Garfunkel. She also loved stargazing in one of her many telescopes.
Janis is survived by her two sons: William and Anthony Loos; one granddaughter, Emerson Loos and two nephews: Keith and Scott Johnson. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Lynda Busby and a brother at birth, Michael.

A gentle soul with a sharp mind, an insatiable curiosity, and a can do attitude. She challenged me to be a better educator offering alternative views of science reasoning. I pray her soul is soaring through and discovering the universe without being encumbered by the prison that was her body I'll miss you, Jan.

Jan loved doing programs with the kids. She had much knowledge for us to learn from. My grandson
remembers working with her at the Blank Park
Zoo. She and her family are in our prayers.

Jan will be sorely missed by all of us who knew her as a good friend and close colleague in the Des Moines Astronomical Society (DMAS). She was for several years, even in her final years of disability, an active leader of DMAS. We mourn the silencing of her voice and the absence of her presence in our midst but know that after a lengthy period of declining health she is in a better place and relieved of her incapacitating illness. She shall not be forgotten.
