John Novotny Obituary

John Dean Novotny

Windsor Heights

John Novotny, 81, was called by name and answered the Lord's call on November 1, 2011, at home with his family by his side. A memorial gathering will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Monday, November 7, 2011, at Brooks Funeral Care, 7975 University Boulevard in Clive. Per his wishes, he will be cremated and interred at a later date at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery.

John was born on January 24, 1930, in Carlisle to George and Mary (Goga) Novotny, the fourth of five children. At the age of four the family moved to West Des Moines, where he grew up. He graduated from Valley High School in 1948, and later enlisted in the Marine Corps. Upon returning home from the service in November of 1952, he was united in marriage to his best friend Dorothy (Dottie) Hudson at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. This union was blessed with three children. John was the owner and operator of Windsor Heights Mobile Oil Station on University for many years, until health issues became a problem. He then owned Valley Lawn Mower Service in West Des Moines and later joined General Binding Corporation as Branch Manager for Iowa and Nebraska. After 25 years, he retired in 1986. John loved to fish, hunt, golf and watching the Iowa Hawkeyes and Nebraska Cornhuskers.

John is survived by his loving wife of 58 years, Dorothy of West Des Moines; children, Julee Novotny of Omaha, John (Kim) Novotny of West Des Moines and Joy Novotny of West Des Moines; sister, Helen Caldwell of West Des Moines; brother, Edward Donald Novotny of West Des Moines; many nieces and nephews and his beloved Brittany, Beau.

He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Ann Payne and brother, George Novotny.

The family would like to thank Hospice of Central Iowa for all their kindness and compassion given to John and his family during his illness.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be donated to the Animal Rescue League or Hospice of Central Iowa.
