Larry Chapman, 68, of Mount Dora, FL, passed from this life in amazing grace, dignity and love on Sunday, August 16, at home in Gig Harbor, Washington after a long battle with cancer.
Larry was born in 1941, to Richard L. and Camilla Crabb Chapman of Waterloo. He graduated from East High School in 1959 where he was actively involved in track, football and student government; he was selected to attend Boy's State and was a Merit Scholar semi-finalist. He graduated from the University of Iowa with a degree in Political Science and was a member of the SAE fraternity. During college Larry began working as a salesman for Electrolux and after graduation he returned to the company. His career with Electrolux took him to Dubuque, St. Louis, Spokane and Seattle, each city marking another achievement in his career. In 1978, Larry moved to Des Moines and founded Inland Coatings, a company in Adel, IA that continues to prosper. In 1993, Larry moved his office and home to Gig Harbor. He was an accomplished pilot and a boating enthusiast - Gig Harbor provided land, sea and air. Larry and Dr. Patricia Maclay were married November 8, 2008. They resided in both Gig Harbor and Mount Dora, FL.
Among those who remain to celebrate his life and hold his memory dear are Patricia, daughters Camilla Chapman of Orlando, FL and Erin Van Fleet of Birmingham, AL; grandchildren Andrew, Lauren and Benjamin; and two brothers, Mike and Brian.
Larry was a champion for the quiet and strong way of life. He taught us to see beauty in the world with eyes of wonder. He showed us how to dream big - and work hard to pursue those dreams, live life with dignity and to love all the way. Larry's memory will be honored by friends and family at a memorial service at Waterloo Memorial Park Cemetery, 3430 W. 4th Street, Waterloo, IA on October 3, 2009, at 10 a.m. Memorials may be made in honor of Lawrence Chapman to Big Brother's, 230 North Thirteenth Street & #8232; Philadelphia, PA 19107 and the Salvation Army.
