Leon August Eggers
Des Moines

Leon August Eggers, 90, of Windsor Heights, IA, died September 11, 2010 at Calvin Community. Visitation is 10 a.m. this Saturday, September 25, at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 4114 Allison Ave., Des Moines, IA. The memorial service is at 11 a.m.
Lee was born September 15, 1919 in Clinton, IA, the son of August Adolph and Agnes Peters Eggers. He graduated from Clinton HS in '37 and joined the Iowa Army National Guard which mobilized after Pearl Harbor. Under General Patton, SSgt Eggers fought with distinction throughout Africa and Europe, awarded the Bronze Star.
Post WWII, Lee went to the University of Iowa, met Dorothy Crider, marrying May 10, 1946. Earned his BS in 3 years, then joined George A. Hormel Co in 1948 in Omaha. Promoted to District Manager in '56 and moved to Des Moines, until retirement in '81. Then, he ushered at Vets Auditorium and many Drake University events. He supported his family's various activities, IowaHawkeyes, his country.
Lee served as Pres., IA Grocers Assoc.; Pres., Windsor Hgts Lions Club; 50-yr member of Acanthus Lodge 632, Scottish Rite - 32 Degree Mason; member Za-Ga-Zig Shrine of Central IA; board member of Calvin Community; board member Windsor Hgts Foundation; Windsor Hgts Kiwanis Club; an Elder & Trustee at Windsor Presbyterian; member of Westminster Presbyterian. Lee supported organ and tissue donation and postmortem donated tissue to help many.
Preceding him in death: his parents, step-father, in-laws, sister and brother-in-law, and sister-in-law.
In lieu of flowers memorials go to the Leon A. Eggers Memorial Fund to benefit the Windsor Hgts Lions Club, Westminster Presbyterian Music Ministry, and Central IA Hospice.
Left to mourn: his wife of 64 years, Dorothy Eggers; three children, Ret USAF Col Dave (Debbie) Eggers of Papillion, NE; Ruth Ann Eggers (Herb) Schwartz of Windsor Hgts; Susan Eggers (John) Horn of Tucson, AZ; seven grandchildren & three spouses, six great-grandchildren, a brother-in-law, and three generations of nieces and nephews.
