Sandy Mathison Obituary
Des Moines - Sandy Elaine (Baker) Mathison, 83, of Des Moines, Iowa passed away on Monday, May 24, 2021 at Edencrest at Beaverdale in Des Moines, Iowa.
Sandy was born July 23, 1937, in Lansing, Michigan to Eckford and Muriel (Palmer) Baker. Her father worked as an electrical engineer and her mother was a homemaker. Following two years of college, Sandy married Wayne Harland Bartz on December 7,1937. They had three children, Michelle, Stacy and Nicole. Her husband Wayne died after a short illness on January 21, 1977. Sandy married Fred Lee Mathison of Nevada, Iowa, and County Supervisor, in 1979. Fred died as the result of a car accident in 2001.
Known for her quick wit and love of people, Sandy enjoyed golf, bridge, music, home décor, politics, and books. She was an excellent piano player, loved old hymns and enjoyed spending time with her family.
Sandy is survived by her sister Colleen (Neil) Hansen, her three daughters Shelly (Brad) Collins, Stacy (Jeff) Sturdivant, and Nicole (Pete) Althaus, six grandchildren, Weston, Quinn, Chris, Parker, Cece, and Elyse, and one great-grandchild, Jackson.
Visitation will be held on Thursday, June 3, 2021 from 10:00 to 11:00 am. A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 AM at Valley Church, Fuller Road, West Des Moines, Iowa,50265. Pastor Don Long will be officiating from Valley Church, West Des Moines.
Burial will be at approximately 1:30 pm at Ames Municipal Cemetery, 310 East 9th Street, Ames, Iowa, 50010.
Memorial contributions can be made to the Alzheimer's Association (alz.org).

Sandy was a colorful lady who loved her family that she was so proud to talk about. She will be missed by many for the electricity she brought into a room when she was present. Truly a unique soul!! I’ll miss you Sandy!
