Venkat Reddy Obituary
- - REDDY - Age 95, passed away June 30, 2018. Dr. Reddy was a world-renowned vision researcher and recognized expert on the metabolism of the lens and the formation of cataract. He received the B.Sc. degree in Chemistry from the University of Madras, India in 1945 and the Ph.D. in Biochemistry from Fordham University in 1952. In 1968, he teamed with Dr. V. Everett Kinsey to establish the Eye Research Institute at Oakland University in Rochester, Michigan and served as its Director for 22 years. Under his leadership, the Institute gained national prominence as a leading ophthalmic research center. He published over 180 peer-reviewed articles during his 50 year career and received many research awards including the prestigious Friedenwald Award in Ophthalmology in 1979 (for his studies on aqueous humor dynamics) and the Michigan Scientist of the Year Award in 1991. His research was supported by the National Eye Institute, NIH, for more than four decades, and included a coveted ten year MERIT Award received in 1989. He was a Distinguished Professor of Biomedical Sciences, Emeritus, at Oakland University. In his spare time, Dr. Reddy had a passion for travel, history, tennis and current events and was an avid bridge player. Dr. Reddy was preceded in death by his wife of 57 years, Alvira. He is survived by his loving children Dr. Vinay N. Reddy (Laura Smidchens) of Portage, MI and Marlita Reddy-Hjelmfelt (Eric Hjelmfelt) of Santa Fe, NM, and seventeen nieces and nephews. Family will receive friends at a brief memorial service on Saturday, July 21, 2018, 2pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons (Vasu, Rodgers & Connell Chapel), 32515 Woodward (btwn 13-14 Mile), 248-549-0500. Memorial tributes may be made to Oakland University for the Alvira M. and Venkat N. Reddy Endowed Research Professorship in Eye Research.

My earlier message had a typo error, which I just noticed upon return from a trip abroad. I am extremely sorry to have misspelled Dr. Reddy's last name. Although I checked the message before sending, but in between some thing must have happened, and I left for my trip. To all those who read my message, and to the Reddy family, my sincerest apology. Dr. Reddy was my senior and a mentor - how could I misspell his name?

In Dr. Teddy's passing, oakland University (OU) and the scientific community have lost a pioneer, visionary research leader dedicated to study of lens and cataract. Numerous accomplished scientist internationally made a mark in vision research due to Dr. Reddy's mentorship, advice and supportive guidance. Launched in 1968 under his co-leadership, The Eye Research Institute at OU remains in 2018 the single most productive research team/unit on campus. His accomplishments and honors brought additional prestige and visibility to OU. I am among numerous students of science who saw Dr. Reddy as a role model and owe his legacy a gratitude.
