Visitation will be held Friday, 5 August 2022 at 9:00 a.m. at Englunds Funeral Home in Slaton Texas followed by a gravesite memorial service at the Resthaven Cemetery outside of Southland Texas. A memorial service celebrating Anna's life will be held on 10 August at 10:30 a.m. at the Christian Care Center chapel in Fort Worth Texas. The family is not asking for flowers or gifts, only your presence at the funeral.
Anna (Ann) was born on 15 November 1929 in Taft, Texas and lived on a farm in Southland, Texas. She was the second oldest of four children. Her father, Arthur, passed away when she was 8 years old and her mother and four children moved to Taft to live with relatives. Her mother eventually remarried and the family settled in Slaton, Texas. Life was difficult during these years, and Ann helped her mother by working in a laundry, among other jobs. She graduated high school in Slaton when she was 15, lied about her age to get into nursing school, and moved away to make a life for herself, eventually helping her younger sister Joyce to join her in Nursing. She settled in Galveston, Texas, where she met her first husband, Dr. William C. Grater. They moved to Dallas, Texas, where he started what would be a very successful medical practice, while Ann gave up nursing to become a homemaker. While the marriage wasn't successful, they did have a son, Lawrence (writing this now). Ann later pursued her teaching certificate at SMU, her counseling certificate from NTSU, and she taught 3rd grade in Carrolton Texas for many years. She met the love of her life, Jim Box, at Highland Park Presbyterian Church in 1975. They soon married and moved to Lewisville, Texas to live on a small farm (now a movie theater parking lot). Ann retired and the couple moved to a larger farm in Carthage, Texas to raise Red Brangus cattle. During this time she was very active in quilting, helped to take care of her elderly mother, and Ann and Jim built their dream home out of two train depots that they renovated. Unfortunately, Jim's health declined and they sold the farm, moved to Fort Worth, settling in Meadowbrook. Jim died shortly after the move. Ann became very active in quilting and bridge, winning many accolades for her quilting and achieving life master in bridge. She was all over town, playing bridge, quilting, and exercising at Baylor, where she made many friends. She was determined to stay sharp, and she did. This is about the time where a little rescue dog named Skeeter came into her life. Some six years ago, Ann and Skeeter decided to sell their house in Meadowbrook and move to Christian Care Centers independent living. This turned out to be a wonderful move as she would make a whole new set of friends along the way. Ann was a breast cancer survivor. Later though, she would get a grim diagnosis that the cancer had spread. The following journey was filled with the blessings of stronger connections with family and friends and new very strong connections with some really wonderful caregivers. Ann passed peacefully at her home at Christian Care. Skeeter is staying on at Christian Care Centers. He has a new home and work to do.

It was my pleasure to know Ann playing bridge together. She was loved by many of us at the Bridge Studio. She was a lovely lady and a keen opponent. I´m happy Skeeter has a home for i remember her love for that little dog. Rest In Peace dear Ann

I knew Ann from exercise at Baylor, Carter Rehabilitation and Fitness Center where she certainly showed use how it was done. I was lucky enough to view her exquisite quilting at the Senior Citizen Quilt Show. I always enjoyed her company and will miss her positive, no nonsense attitude to life. She handled her diagnosis with grace and strength. RIP. Condolences to all her family and friends.

A beautifully written message that told me so much more about Anna. I knew her from bridge in Ft worth and she was a favorite of mine. She always had a kind word that isn´t always a happening at the bridge table! I will remember her fondly and send my condolences to her family.

What a beautiful tribute to a beautiful and enduring sister of West Texas. So wish we had crossed paths somewhere along the way. May Light Perpetual shine upon her. And wishing Skeeter Many Years!
