Charles Owens Obituary

Charles Ervin Owens, 74, passed away Thursday, April 10, 2008, at his home after battling cancer.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Sunday at Wiley Funeral Home, 504 Holden St., Glen Rose. The Rev. Ronnie Shackelford will officiate. Burial: Squaw Creek Cemetery in Rainbow.
Charles was born Sept. 24, 1933, in Rhonesboro to Roger and Sybil Owens, though he grew up in Fort Worth. In 1952, he was drafted into the Army, spending time in Germany. In 1955, he married Loretta Miller in Fort Worth and they had three daughters, Vicki, who was born with cerebral palsy, Susan and Sherri. In 1972, they bought a home in North Richland Hills.
Charles' father had insisted he take steel guitar lessons as a child, and in the 1960s, Charlie (as called by his friends) fell back on his music to make a living, playing steel guitar in Fort Worth and surrounding areas. He remained friends over the years with many local and well-known singers and musicians such as "Willie" and "Leon."
Charlie was very proficient on the computer and shared his knowledge with many friends and relatives. He also loved taking pictures, especially on vacation trips he and Loretta made by car. When the bluebonnets bloomed it was time to go to the Hill Country. Over the years Charlie had and loved many dogs. There was Skeeter, Boy, Buddy, BJ, Duke and now Scooter. Also, over the years, Charlie had several careers, delivering telegrams, building trailer homes, working for Chance Vought and roofing houses.
In the 1980s, he went to work at Tarrant County Precinct 4, for B.D. Griffin, and retired from there "to play golf" (right- or left-handed). Golf was an obsession with him and until cancer moved into his back, he played two or three times per week.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Vicki; brother, Eddie; and many musician friends.
The family wishes to thank American Hospice and many caretakers.
Survivors: Wife, Loretta; daughters, Susan and Sherri; brothers, Larry, Harvey and wife, Rebecca; grandchildren, Steven Pryhuber and wife, Janet, Natalie Pryhuber Fant and husband, Tony; great-grandson, Ayden Fant; cousins, Glenda Knifong and husband, Jim, Darrell Owens and wife, Laverne, Shirley Matthews, Sam Matthews and wife, Valeta; nieces and nephews; Whitter cousins; several in-laws; and many wonderful friends and neighbors.

Sherri & Loretta, didn't get to stand by your side, as you honored your Dad/husband, but stand with you still, in heart and spirit, praying for you; that you experience the real peace and deep comfort only God can supply. Our loved ones leave us, in this life, but God promised "I will never leave you or forsake you". We can hold Him to His word! Know you're continually in my prayers, and I'm near any time you need me.

Charlie was a walking history book on country music in For Worth and surrounding areas. My wife, Carol Savage Jones, and I loved hearing him tell stories about Bob Wills and other greats. His tales were always brightened by the twinkle in his eye and a smile. We both served with Charlie and Loretta on the Cowtown Society of Western Music board and were privileged to get to know this great couple. We will really, really miss Charlie. He was a special man. Charlie was in my life for as long as I can remember. He and my sister Loretta (who my family all calls Junie) married when I was 8 years old. I can not remember a day when he was not in our family. He used to bring his steel guitar down to Glen Rose to play for us when we lived in Rainbow. I cried every time they went back to Ft. Worth after a visit. He used to take me, my sister Lanell, and his brothers Larry and Lynn to the stock car races. He loved to entertain us by walking across the floor on his hands. We had to see him do this every time we were around him. He always was at our family events taking pictures, which were very good, I might add. He definately will be missed by all of us as we loved him like a brother, that he was. He will be missed very much. I love you. Gay

I will miss Charles very very much!
He was my cousin and we had a
very loving and kind relationship
thru the years. We always talked
about our early years, family, baseball, and golf. I always
checked with him on the Texas
Rangers. He was an authority.
I cannot begin to say how much I
will miss him! He was a great
person and I loved him very much.

Charles will be missed greatly by my husband and I. Several years ago, after purchasing my first computer, he was the one who taught Jim and I the finer points. I called him my "personal computer guru". He never complained when we called and insisted in coming over immediately to help us. He was a very kind, loving and compassionate person. He made sure his brother, who died last year, was seen after and also, his mother a few years ago. Charles, we will miss you.
