Charles Weinert Obituary

Charles M. Weinert, a retired U.S. Army colonel, died Thursday, June 22, 2006, at a local hospital.

Funeral: noon Tuesday in Moore Funeral Home Chapel. Burial: Dallas-Fort Worth National Cemetery. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home.

Charles Weinert was born June 29, 1929, in Philadelphia, Pa. He attended Philadelphia schools and graduated from Seton Hall University in 1951 with a bachelor of science in business management. He entered the U.S. Army in 1951 and completed Officer Candidate School in 1952.

Col. Weinert saw hostile action in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He served in the 3rd Infantry Division, 82nd Airborne Division and as the senior medical adviser to the II ARVN Logistics Command. Col. Weinert received the Combat Medical Badge and numerous awards and decorations such as the Legion of Merit and the Bronze Star.

He was injured numerous times and never asked for a single Purple Heart, although he could have received a dozen. As a result of his injuries and exposure to such hazards as Agent Orange, chemical nerve agents and repeated hostile fire, he had over 60 surgeries in his lifetime.

He was the first official observer to be sent to Jordan in the Middle East during the Black September International Red Cross-Red Crescent Casualty Relief Effort. He pioneered the development of Health Services Command, the beginning support planning that has evolved into the superlative troop recovery and medical treatment program that the U.S. Army uses today for wounded soldiers in combat theaters. Col. Weinert completed the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in 1965. In 1969, he received a master's degree in hospital administration from Baylor University.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Dolores; parents, Philip W. and Mary McGuigan Weinert; his brothers, John A. Weinert and Eugene P. Weinert; and sister-in-law, Eileen M. Kelly Weinert.

Dear Steve, Mike and Kenneth:

I was saddened to hear of the loss of your father. The morning your father died, I woke up early with no idea as to why I was awake! When I heard about your dad, I imagined he just stopped in to say good-bye.

Having lost so many important people in my life so recently, I appreciate how difficult it is to lose your dad. He was quite a guy! My dad would tell lots of stories of how he and your dad would scrap within the family, yet always turn a united front when challenged from the outside. And one lasting impression Dad had of his last visit to your parents was how much your dad loved your mom, and now they are most certainly together again.

Dad was always pleased to hear from his brother Chuck, especially as Dad grew more ill. And I know that Mom enjoyed her many chats with your dad after my dad was gone.

I have enjoyed hearing about each of you through the years, though it is only Steve that I've seen since grandmom's funeral. I am glad to know that in large part you are well.

I regret that we will be unable to join you for your dad's funeral. How I would love to be there to give you each a hug, and give your dad a last kiss -- please give him one for me! Please know that you are always welcome in our home in DC (Silver Spring) and that you are most certainly in our thoughts and prayers, especially at this difficult time.

Much love to you all,

Laura, Cristian, Michael and John Paul
