Holt Hickman Obituary

Holt Hickman, an early manufacturer of auto air conditioners who used part of his fortune to revitalize Fort Worth's Historic Stockyards as a major tourist destination, died Saturday evening after a long illness, his son Brad Hickman said today. He was 82.

While Hickman spent decades building local companies that sold air conditioners and cruise control devices to automakers around the world, the cowboy-hatted entrepreneur is best known for rescuing the "world's largest" honky tonk, Billy Bob's Texas, and transforming the struggling Stockyards to what is now a magnet to more than 3 million annual visitors. An even bigger Hickman project for the district is in development.

"Holt was a visionary," said H.B. "Hub" Baker, one of Hickman's numerous partners in various investments and executive director of the Cowtown Coliseum and the Stockyards Championship Rodeo. "He had love and heart in his soul for the Fort Worth Stockyards. This is a one-of-a-kind thing and he realized that. I loved him for that."

Mr. Hickman was born in Fort Worth but grew up in Weatherford after his parents divorced. Attending Southern Methodist University on a swimming scholarship, he worked vacations at his father's battery business.

After serving as an officer in the Air Force, he and his wife pulled together $25,000, half from savings - "It was every penny Jo and I had in the world" - and half borrowed to start Lone Star Manufacturing to make ACs. He sold the company in 1978, and formed Specific Cruise Systems the next year, merging it with another manufacturer in 1990 to form SCS/Frigette, which brought him back to producing auto air-conditioning systems. In 2006, he sold most of the company for $70 million.

According to longtime Stockyards businessman Steve Murrin, Mr. Hickman got interested in the Stockyards district in 1988 when Murrin mentioned that another local millionaire, Richard Rainwater, was in the running to invest in Billy Bob's, which had closed after its founder, Billy Bob Barnett, over-extended himself in non-income producing real estate.

Mr. Hickman, Murrin and Don Jury, a former financial officer at Justin Boots, formed a partnership to reopen Billy Bob's later that year.

Then Hickman, alone or with various partners including Dallas heiress Lyda Hunt Hill, began acquiring property after property. Among them were the Livestock Exchange Building and Stockyards Station, once crumbling hog and sheep pens for the annual Fort Worth Fat Stock Show before it relocated to the Cultural District. He also built what is today the 101-room Hyatt Place Stockyards Hotel on Exchange Avenue.

"Holt was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather and we will all miss him greatly," Brad Hickman said.

Hickman is survived by his widow, Mrs. Jo Hickman, son Brad and daughter Mrs. Brenda Kostohryz. A service is planned for 10 a.m. Wednesday at University Christian Church, followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery.

My deepest condolences to the Hickman family. I had the great pleasure of working for Holt for 3-1/2 years and living in the great city of Fort Worth. It was one of the best chapters of my life, in large part to the western cowboy spirit of the community, and Holt's contribution to it.
I have many wonderful memories of his cheerful demeanor and his Texas statesmanship. A mighty oak has fallen.....rest in peace Holt.

The very first job I ever had was at Lone Star. My dad Jim Jarvis took me to work and put me in the order department and told me to do what I was told. Of course I knew that he was saying you will be treated like any other employee. About a week in Mr. Hickman called me to his office over the intercom. I went straight up to his office and he asked me to please take this money and go get him a candy bar. I asked him what kind and he said anything chocolate without nuts. I went and got the candy bar and took it right up and he thanked me and I went back to work. Later that day on our way home my dad said what did Holt call you to his office for? I preceded to tell him what he wanted and then he said what did you get? I said a Snikers and my dad laughed so hard. Of course it was then I realized why it was so funny. I just bought him my favorite candy bar and of course it is then I realized what I had done and laughed too.

Holt was a great friend. He was a man of high integrity and always kept his word. I first met Holt while I worked for a competing Air Conditioning Co., back in the early 1970s. Later, I worked for one of his largest parts suppliers, and developed a wonderful friendship with him. He was a tough negotiator, but, when the deal was done, he stood behind his word.
The world just lost a real visionary leader and "all-round-good-guy".
Holt, you will surely be missed, as no one can replace you.
Thanks for being my friend.

I remember Holt Hickman as a very friendly, caring, and generous man who treated others with kindness and respect. You just didn't meet many like him; he was one of a kind. From the first time I met him many years ago, he has always stood out in my opinion to be one of the greatest innovators and leaders in the entire A/C industry. My condolences and prayers go out to his family, close friends, and all those who truly feel his loss. May God grant healing and comfort and a peace that passes all understanding to all of you. Holt:

We thought of you in love today, but that is nothing new.
We thought about you yesterday, and days before that, too.

We think of you in silence, we often speak your name.
Now all we have is memories and your picture in a frame.

Your memory is our keepsake, with which we'll never part.
God has in you in his keeping, but we have you in our hearts.

It broke our heart to lose you, but you didn't go alone.
For a part of us went with you...the day God took you home.
...Author unknown

Holt, thank you for giving me the opportunity in 2007 to pursue my dream and passion of teaching western culture and history to anyone who walked through the doors at Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame. I will never forget it. It made an impact that you will never know.

I also want to thank you for keeping the Stockyards" alive through your continual support, your vision and your passion for the historical value they hold.

In addition, Fort Worth and all that the city encompasses, lost a great friend and supporter. There are just not enough words to describe the loss.

I will remember the funny stories we shared and how I learned so much from you...not only in business but how to go for what I wanted....whatever be damned!

I am one of MANY who will miss your laughter, your smile, your personality, your keen business sense, but most importantly you!

Look out Heaven, a one-of-a-kind man just entered the gates!

God Bless You Holt Hickman. May you rest in peace and fly with the angels.

Lastly, I send my sympathies, love, prayers and huge hugs to Jo, Brad, Brenda and the rest of the Hickman family. This is a huge hole....but one that will be filled with more memories than the size of the hole.

Love to you all,
Jami Hoffman
