James Noah Obituary

James Durwood Noah, 80, a retired Fort Worth Fire Department battalion chief, passed away Friday, Sept. 5, 2008, at a local hospital after a year of many health problems.
Funeral: 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christ Chapel at 3740 Birchman in Fort Worth. Interment: Greenwood Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Mayfield Kiser Funeral Home.
Jim was born on April 24, 1928, to Jasper and Beulah Moore Noah in Fort Worth. He started working at age 14 and held many varied positions, sometimes several at a time until he joined the Fort Worth Fire Department on April 1, 1952. His father was and had been a Fort Worth firefighter prior to Jim's birth and later on Jim's brother joined them. Jim held many jobs throughout his career with the fire department, including fire alarm, fire department garage, fire safety, district fire chief and PIO. The fire department was his life and his passion.
He never tired of meeting new people and loved his children and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren tirelessly. Jim loved to travel with his wife and thoroughly enjoyed their trip to Germany in 1984 and the two trips to England in 1995 and 1998.
Jim has been mentioned in several books in connection with his knowledge of fire department history where he was the historian for many years.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a daughter, a sister, a brother and a nephew.
Survivors: Wife, Virginia, brother, Bob Noah and wife, Gloria; sons, George Noah and Mark Hukel and wife, Tammy; daughters, Janice Daries, Lisa White, Kay Ramos and husband, Rick, Karen Nance and Kim Smith; 23 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends.

My late husband and I met Jim when we were on honeymoon in 1981. He was so kind and took us to visit places of interest to my husband, butch stoltz, who was an animator. We had travelled from our home in south africa and remembered jim with great fondness. Cherry stoltz

Chief,
Is what I always called Jim Noah. I was his aide during the heat wave of 1980. We rode together for a year. It was during this time that I got to know him. He was a loving, passionate, and forgiving man. He loved the Department, his family, his friends, and most of all, his wife Virginia.
The Chief never made a difference in his rank as some officers do. He treated everyone with the same fairness and compassion. He never said a bad thing about anyone... he always focused on a person's strong points. We need more like him. He will be missed but not forgotten. I loved Chief Noah and am proud to be his friend.
God Bless Virginia, family, friends; and God Bless the Fort Worth Fire Department that has raised so many of us.

Hello Virginia. I am so sorry to have just learned of James passing. You have my sympathy and are in my prayers. I remember when you and James first met and fell in love. You would bake cakes & other food items to take to the firemen. It's been a long time... I have thought of you often and wondered how you and James were. May God bless, comfort and sustain you and the rest of James' family. Please contact me.

I remenber the first time we were introduced to Jim very well. I knew then that we had met a real friend. That proved to be true thru the years that we have known him. I know that he loved being in West Virginia in July. He always said that the freshed air in the world was there. He was also able to give us a good lesson in the history of Texas. He also gave us tours of most of the state which we will remenber. I started to Golf because of him too. We would have liked to be there with the family but time was not on our side. It is with heavy hearts that we send our prayers to all the family.

Jim Noah was as valuable a resource as the Fort Worth Fire Department ever had. Though his assignments in the department were varied, for many years he was the man the media and the curious turned to with questions about the history and lore of the department. Day or night, he was unfailingly courteous, helpful and professional. He loved the fire department so much that he collected everything he could about its people and their contributions to the city. Soft-spoken and cheerful, he loved the traditions of the Fort Worth Fire Department and during his long career he became one of the department's finest representatives and a part of the history he compiled.

One of my fondest memories of my Grandfather was just shortly after I had broken my left arm and went to visit him with my dad, George Noah. My Grandfather was the first to sign my cast and he signed it with drawing a perfect picture of Mickey Mouse. It comforted me so and helped me forget that I had a cast on. I was around 6 years old then, I am 38 now and I still can picture it today.

To
all of the Noah family, your loss of Jim is shared by so many, and especially
to the firefighters he worked with for so many years. Jim's constant interest
in the fire history of Fort Worth was invaluable to all firefighters as well
as anyone who had an interest in the fire service. I enjoyed so many different
tales Jim has told of his and the department's history. I could always
count on Jim giving me an interesting rundown on most any historical item
or event in our history. The Fort Worth Fire Department has a good recorded history thanks
to Jim's interest and hard work. Thanks, Jim!

I was sorry to read of the death of my old friend Jim Noah today. Those of us who worked as news reporters in Fort Worth in the sixties and seventies had no better friend than "Fireman Jim" Noah. He taught fire safety education by using his great talent as a cartoonist. He was often a guest of Johnny Hay and Icky Twerp teaching little children fire safety. He was a credit to the Fort Worth Fire Department and many of us have lost a great friend.

Dear Noah family,
I am sorry to learn of Jim's passing. Having first met Jim in the 1980's when I became a member of the same Masonic Lodge. He was so proud of his family and his career in the fire department. I know he was proud of son Mark , when Mark held the same postion in the Lodge as Jim did many years prior. To his brother Bob who I have known since the 70's when I was in the restaurant business. Again we give thanks to the Lord for Jim's time here with us. May the Lord grant you peace and comfort during this time.

I have so many wonderful memories of Jim. My entire life of our wonderful family reunions in Seymour....seems like Jim's smiling face was always the first one I saw! Maybe because I also remember him being one of the ones to go greet every family member as they arrived. I will miss seeing him at our reunions....I cannot imagine the wonderful reunion there must have been as he arrived at the gates of heaven! I love you, Jim!!
