José Valderas Obituary

Dr. José G. Valderas
January 16, 1926 - February 13, 2021
Keller, Texas - José G. Valderas, M.D. passed away peacefully in his home in Keller, Texas on February 13th while surrounded by family at 95 years of age. He is survived by his loving wife, Roberta (Bobbie) Redman Valderas, their two children, Leah and Andrew; his six children, Maria, José, Robert, Mark, Merci, and Rick from his first marriage to Peggy Wahl Valderas; and his fourteen grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren on the way. Jose's daughter, Peggy, devastatingly passed in her youth at the age of 18.
José was born in Ciales, a small town in north-central Puerto Rico, and was the youngest of a family of six children. He exhibited intellectual brilliance at an early age and skipped four grades of school, graduating from high school at the age of 14. He won a full scholarship to the University of Puerto Rico, where he majored in chemistry, graduated at 17, and again won a full scholarship to the University of Maryland Medical School. Upon completing residencies at St. Agnes Hospital and in Aguadilla, Puerto Rico, he returned to Baltimore where he completed a residency in OB-GYN at the University of Maryland Hospital. He then served as a captain in the Air Force as the OB-GYN doctor on a base in Mississippi until returning to Baltimore and practicing at St. Agnes Hospital for the rest of his career. He served as the Chief of OB-GYN for seven years during his tenure. He performed surgery at the University of Maryland Hospital and the Greater Baltimore Medical Center, lectured at the University of Maryland, and ran his private practice independently for twelve years until he was joined by a partner over the balance of his career. His practice brought over 11,000 babies into the world by the time of his retirement. No doubt he was well-known in the Catonsville area.
José's foremost legacy derives from the impact he had on others. His patients regularly recount examples of his professionalism, compassion, and skill in helping to bring their children into the world; through untold difficulties, his expertise navigated the most fragile of lives from harm. He restored countless women to health through his gynecological surgery. He wrote, "My years of practice were very happy for me. I loved the practice of OB-GYN. I can't think of anything I would have done that I would have enjoyed more."
Dr. Valderas also had an impact on the lives of young men through his love of scholastic basketball. He escorted several teams of Cardinal Gibbons High School, where two of his sons played, on trips to his beloved Puerto Rico where they participated in tournaments in the 1970s. He returned nearly annually to the island with his sons to snorkel and gather with family.
He was happy with his life and loved his family dearly, including those in Puerto Rico. Upon blowing out candles on his 93rd birthday, he cheered, "Life for me has been extremely good, extremely interesting and I am very happy that I was born and that I was here and that I enjoyed my life."
The family plans to hold a celebration of life in the near future. In the meantime, in lieu of flowers, donations in his name may be made to the United Way of Puerto Rico (unitedwaypr.org).

Dr. Valderas delivered me and then later would become my first GYN doctor. He was an exceptional Doctor, wonderful mentor and lifelong friend to many. He took great care of my mother when she was pregnant with myself and my siblings. I am glad he got to live out his retirement well into his Golden years with those he cared about the most. Now that you are in heaven, you can finally ask that question you said you´d ask God when you got there, "Why did you put the uterus on top of the bladder?".

I was amazed when I read several memorials posted. They were almost identical to mine. We lost our first child very early and I think it effected him almost as much as it did me. Low and behold, our second pregnancy ended nine months to the day later. Surprise a Leap Year Boy. I also thought about him around the end of 2020. Thinking of sending a Christmas card including a picture of our family along with a nice note along with a recent picture of our gang and to wisj he and his wife to stay safe during Covid. I
hesitated, thinking it would be too corny. I wish I would listen more seriously to my thoughts at those times. He delivered two of our three children, and Dr. G. the middle child. You see Dr. Valderas was in Puerto Rico and would not return to work until the following Monday. Those children are now 57, 53 and 47. I know he had a good life because he was a wonderful man to others and great ob/gyn to me. I am so sad to see that he has passed and send sincere condolences to his entire family. God Bless

For some reason, Dr. Valdares came to my mind the other day. So, today I went on line and found his obituary. I was not expecting to see that he had passed. He was absolutely the best doctor I could have ever asked for my OB-GYN.
He delivered my daughter in 1964, and my son in 1965. I know of many others who also respected and loved him. He was not only a wonderful doctor, but a wonderful person. I will never forget him. I know he is in
heaven. He was one of God’s blessings. My deepest sympathy to his family. Rest in Peace Dr. Valdares.

Dr . Valderas was a wonderful man who cared for me after my first miscarriage. He shared some wonderful words of wisdom and comfort that brought me peace and gave me the confidence to move ahead to become a mother just nine months later. When I became pregnant again less than a year later, he told me that two children were not twice the work, they were twice the blessing! He was truly a blessing to me. May he Rest In Peace!

Dr.Valderas delivered our second son. He was the most kind and patient man ever. Back then most husbands were just starting to go in the delivery room and mine hadn’t decided yet. When Dr. Valderas entered the room and asked if he was going in he hesitated and Dr. Valderas just tossed him a gown and said gown up! What a wonderful legacy he left.

A very dear friend who delivered one of my sons. He tried to talk me out of Pathology and into OB/GYN.

Dr. Valderas was my doctor until he retired I went to him as a young 19 year old about to be married. He was my doctor until he retired and went to Florida. He was a gentleman, a scholar, an excellent surgeon, and had more empathy and love in his heart for his patients. I am so happy to hear that he lived to be 95 and had that time to spend with his family. Rest in peace my dear friend and I will never forget you as you brought my children into this world.
