Kurt Ziegler Obituary

Kurt Ziegler Jr., 66, passed away Monday, Aug. 12, 2013. Service: Private services will be held for the family. Memorials: In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Relay For Life Link (American Cancer Society). He was born in Vienna, Austria, and sailed on a boat with his Mom to Canada before being allowed to enter the United States (there was a moratorium due to the war on immigrants entering the U.S.). After he learned the English language, he moved to Arizona and became an American citizen. He graduated from high school and went on to get his bachelor's degree from Arizona State University and earning his master's degree from American University. He was hired right after graduation by IBM; went to New York, Iowa, Connecticut and Florida where he met his wife, Dianne, in 1980, Texas, then back to New York and retired in 2000. Although retired, he had many adventures and successes with start-up companies around the world. His desire to continue to work, provide, and mentor drove him back to his most recent position at TXU. He was a published author, enjoyed going to the movies and out to lunch with his wife, and really enjoyed going to Quail Creek Shooting Range. Being a real people-person, Kurt loved throwing employee parties at his home as well as playing and swimming with his grandchildren. He was a great human being and tried to see all views of any situation; his guidance, and most of all his love and protection for his family, will be greatly missed. Survivors: He is survived by his wife, Dianne; daughters, Korina, Jana and Erika; son, Kurt Ziegler III; grandchildren, Kaleb, Chance, Falon, Maci and Noa; son-in-law, David; his sister, Sylvia Elliott and family; nieces and nephews; also, Stephanie; many friends around the world, and co-workers.

I think of Kurt often. I recall that we had the most heated discussions when doing software planning. I you were watching you would think that we were going to get our fists out! After we made our points we both laughed and said it was all a good discussion. We had a lot of fun with work and telling old stories. I miss him a lot.
All my best to Diane and all the family.

Kurt was an amazing person with a positive outlook and disarming personality. I worked with him, only for one year, but he left a long lasting impression on me. My sincere condolences to the family.

My condolences to the Ziegler family. I worked with Kurt in the early 90's. He was my mentor and a friend. He taught me the "right" way of doing things and helped me get to where I am today. May he rest in peace.

Me and Dad in Texas

September 16, 2013

Dad,

You are missed dearly. As were many opportunities that we had to be together. I cherish our texts, emails and our visits while you were here in the Bay Area, The kids miss you too. I hear Chance brag about his Texas Grandpa and all the amazing "computer inventions" that he made, as well as the book that he has on his dresser to show his friends that you wrote.

The impact you made all across the globe is astronomical. I can only strive each and every day to be all that you wanted me to be and all that I learned to be from you.

Every day is painful for me. Life became so technological, perhaps people, including myself, rely on it too much and forget that there is nothing that is more valuable than time spent in the same room, or sharing live conversation, or reaching out and hugging someone. But...I was raised by a technology genius.

I look at your marriage to Dianne as a real life fairy tale. It gives me hope. It was/is unbreakable. My heart truly grieves for her personal loss every day. A loss I can only imagine, because I've not shared every day of 33+ years, day in and day out, with a best friend, a life partner, a father to my children, the love of my life..my everything. I'm sure her heart aches and I pray that God warms her heart with little things every second that remind her that you two will meet again.

As my dad, I thank you. I walk this planet with neither bioloical parent alive, and it feels really big and really unfamiliar all of a sudden.

Please know I love you dearly, Chance, Macy and even Buster love and miss you daily as well.

I will never let the strength, resilience and ability to problem solve that you instilled in me falter.

Rest in peace and know, I'm down here looking up at you as I always have as your little girl.

Much love always,
Erika

I worked with Kurt briefly and in a very short amount of time realized what a good person he was. Not only a brilliant business mind, but he always had a great life perspective. It was a sad day for me yesterday to hear of Kurt's passing. My condolences to Kurt's family and friends.

To Dianne and everyone in Kurt's Family:

You have my most sincere condolences and my prayers and thoughts are with you all.

I worked with Kurt at TXU. I was shocked and hurt by his passing. I enjoyed working with Kurt. The comments in his obituary around his desire to continue working to contribute to and mentor others are very fitting. He enjoyed working with people to resolve issues and was a valuable contributor.

I always admired Kurt's passion regarding the items he worked on. You could tell he loved what he did.

Take comfort in knowing that Kurt leaves a significant legacy through his family and the people he interacted with.

I will miss him.

Please let me know if there is anything that I can do for you or your family.

Kurt was always the voice of reason in every conversation and helped drive us through murky waters during very tense meetings related to where the issue at large was occurring - he never allowed one position to be concrete unless it was proven completely. He helped me tremendously in understanding how to present data in meaningful ways - while I still have a lot to learn his guidance was invaluable.

When I heard of his passing I thought about life and just how precious it is, and then understood that God made a decision and while I don't completely agree with Him, I am extremely saddened that he took one of The Great Ones.

I will miss you Kurt. God Speed!

He was a genius and one of the finest technical minds I've even know. I will greatly miss him.
