Marilyn Olga Clare King-Rankine obituary, 1944-2014, Fort Worth, TX

Marilyn King-Rankine Obituary

Dr. Marilyn King-Rankine, M.D., respected cardiologist and electrophysiologist and Fort Worth's first black cardiologist, greeted the Lord Christ on Friday, April 11, 2014, after a courageous almost two-year battle with uterine cancer. Funeral: 1 p.m. Saturday, April 26, at All Saints Episcopal Church, 5001 Crestline Road, the Rev. Christopher N. Jambor rector. Immediately afterwards, the family will receive guests at River Crest Country Club, 1501 Western Ave. Interment: Naples Memorial Gardens in Naples, Fla. Wake and visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, April 25, at Carter Metropolitan Christian Methodist Episcopal Church, 4601 Wichita St. Dr. King-Rankine emigrated to the U.S. during the turbulent early 1960s from the former British Guiana, a small country in global South America. She subsequently received a B.A. in zoology from Howard University, an M.A. in microbiology from Howard University and her M.D. from Temple University. She was accepted into an internship program by the renowned Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio, where she completed her internship, residency and cardiology and electrophysiology training. Marilyn distinguished herself historically in her budding medical career, becoming the first female ever accepted into the Cleveland Clinic's electrophysiology program. Dr. King-Rankine relocated to Texas in 1985 and opened her cardiology and electrophysiology practice, immediately achieving another historic milestone -- becoming Fort Worth's first black cardiologist. Her private practice also included the surgical implantation and explanation of defibrillators and pacemakers, as well as nuclear cardiology. Dr. King-Rankine continued to pioneer in her fields of mission. In 2011, just a year before her illness, she was the first Fort Worth cardiologist to explant pacemaker leads using a revolutionary laser technique. Dr. King-Rankine was a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the American Medical Association, the Texas Medical Association, the Tarrant County Medical Society and the Heart Rhythm Society. She served as the local American Heart Association president from 1990-1991 and was the recipient of numerous community service awards and commendations during the course of her long and storied career. Dr. King-Rankine was best known for her abject humility; unwavering dedication to learning; seemingly tireless, countless hours spent examining patients, speaking to their families, and performing surgical procedures -- even through the wee hours of the morning; compassionate and informative bedside manner; genteel mannerisms; keen wit; extraordinarily reliable wisdom; profoundly generous spirit and energies -- she willingly, patiently and happily both formally and informally taught many medical students, nurses, techs and others; soothing demeanor; and, of course, her sweetly lingering, lilting, mellifluous accent -- all of which will be greatly missed by her beloved adopted city of Fort Worth and beyond. Survivors: Daughters, Ifeyinwa "Fey" Ugokwe, Esq., and Patrice Rankine; sisters, Dawne King, Ms. Hermine King and Ms. Sheila King; brother, Mr. Hilton King; and nieces and a nephew by her late brother, Dr. Loris King, M.D., Dr. Stella King, M.D., Crystal King, M.B.A., and Kwame King; and many other nieces, nephews and friends.

I remember how she taught me in a very caring way when I called her at night when I was on call. I will always remember our conversation at Dr's day lunch. She shared her experience of getting through her training, how hard she had to work as an immigrant, a woman, a woman of color, and a fellow with little kids. Thank you for sharing your story with me that day, and I really needed to hear it. Sending warm thoughts and prayers to you and your family...

It broke my heart to hear of Dr. King-Rankine passing away. I have seen her over ten years. She called me her problem child, because every time I needed surgery something would happen! I know she saved my life! She was the kindness most caring Dr. I ever had and probably will ever have. I don't know of anyone that could fill her shoes. May God bless and keep his loving arms around her family and guide them through this time! Dr.Rankine, you will be missed and loved forever!

My condolences to the family of Dr. Marilyn King Rankine. Marilyn and I were classmates and friends in High School in Guyana. We kept in touch through her time in Washington DC, then, with the busy medical school studies, contact became infrequent. I am sad to know that she left us so soon, but God is in control of our time here on earth. She has completed her assignment and is resting now. Dawne, Ife, Patrice and the family, be very proud of her accomplishments and the lives she touched. Let the love of friends and family comfort you in this time of grief. You are in my prayers. I cherish the memories of our happy, carefree high school days. Rest in peace Marilyn.

I was saddened to hear of the passing of Dr. King-Rankine. I met her when I worked in medical records at All Saints Hospital. I also met Patrice (she was probably about eight years old then) and was told about Fey of whom she was very proud.
Dr. King-Rankine was a caring and concerned physician and always had an upbeat, positive attitude with a big, warm smile and a lilt in her voice--I suppose you can tell I am a fan! She was an outstanding physician and a kind and caring lady. My condolences to all her family, especially Patrice and Fey. My thoughts are with you.

I developed atrial fibrillation and Dr King Rankine sent me to an ablation specialist. He estimated that he would need to repeat the procedure 4 times till the AF was cleared up. I talked this over with Dr KR and told her that it was too much of a crap shoot for me to have the priocedure done 4 times. She looked at me and said " Do you want a clunker or a cadillac?" I had the procedure done once and have operated a cadillac for 5 years.

May God bless and comfort her family. She was such a blessing to me and my family.

Before my father's death in 2010, Dr. King-Rankine was his cardiologist. Her care and expertise enhanced the last years of his life. Even though he was in his nineties, Dr. King-Rankine showed the utmost respect and concern towards him as well as to my mother and me, always taking the time to answer our questions with patience and sensitivity. And when it was time, she took on the difficulty task in the most gracious manner possible of letting us know that the end was near. We will never forget that.
My mother and I would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of this marvelous physician. May you find some comfort in knowing how many lives she blessed.
