Matthew Wallace Obituary

Matthew Wallace SAN ANTONIO -- Matthew Joseph Wallace (Matt) passed away Sunday morning, August 12, 2018 in San Antonio, Texas. He was 46. SERVICE: Matt Wallace's wishes were to be cremated. Memorial and Celebration of his Life will be on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at North Richland Hills Baptist, 6955 Blvd 26/Grapevine Hwy, North Richland Hills, Tx 76180. Matt Wallace was born on June 30, 1972 in Cleburne, Texas. He graduated from LD Bell High School in 1991 in Hurst, Texas and then began his career at 18 in the fire alarm industry that continued until his passing. He started out as a fire alarm tech working throughout the Dallas/Ft. Worth area and worked his way up to General Manager, where in August of 2017 it brought him to San Antonio, Texas to oversee and run full operations for Koetter Fire Protection. Matt was a man who worked hard making sure not only family but countless friends were taken care of. He had a big heart for people, if you needed anything, this man was likely to figure it out or take care of it for you. One minute he could have you upset and the next you couldn't help but love him. He loved to pick his battles whether betting against the Cowboys or picking away at politics. Most everyone who knew Matt knew he was passionate about his hunting and fishing and he didn't do anything small. He hunted many leases in different states and in 2008 made his way to Africa with his dad and several friends for what he considered the ultimate hunting trip. In 2014 Matt decided to focus on his other passion, fishing, and with his friend Mike Hubbard they started Double M Outdoors Guide Service. He loved being on the water and watching his customers have a great time. If you had the opportunity to be on the boat and fish with him, you knew he was focused and determined to make the trip out to be the most memorable experience for you, not only were you going to catch fish but you were going to laugh and have a great time, he wouldn't have had it any other way. This man lived his life to the fullest enjoying his time here by loving, caring and protecting those he loved even at the time of his illness with liver and kidney failure and up until he passed. He fought a tough battle for the last few months hoping to get transplanted soon but an infection set in and took his life before he could be saved with new organs. His presence will be deeply missed and leave a huge hole in so many of our lives and hearts. To know him was to love him. Matt Wallace, you will be forever remembered and loved. SURVIVORS: His amazing life will always be cherished in the lives of his loving wife, Kathy of San Antonio, Texas. His children; son, Jordan Wallace and his wife, Rebekah; daughter, Jaycee Wallace; son, Jacob Wallace; stepson, Garrett Schooling and his husband, Garrett Kilgore; and stepdaughter, Meghan Schooling, all living in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area. His parents; Joe Wallace and his wife, Betty of Hurst, Texas, Diane Choate and her husband, Larry of Cleburne, Texas; His siblings, twin sister, Marci McMahan and husband, Mark and sister, Ashley Wallace both of Cleburne, Texas; His Grandmother, Joyce Emmert of Cleburne, and countless nephews, nieces and great nephews and nieces.

There are some patients that you move on to your next assignment and forget their name the next day, and there are some that you remember forever. In the 3 days I took care of Matt I began to love him and his family, they allowed me into their lives at one of the toughest times. I wish the best for all of my patients and their families. Unfortunately, liver failure is a tough illness that can hit suddenly and progress rapidly, with or without transplantation many patients do not survive. Losing patients is one of the hardest parts of my profession, and some are much more difficult to handle. The day Matt passed my assignment was changed, I was originally assigned to him but hadn't realized he was still in ICU, I imagined him to have improved and transferred. Later in the day my charge nurse informed me that he didn't make it, and I was in complete shock. Although I understand liver disease, I never imagined this to happen to him and to happen so soon. I was only his nurse for three days but his death shook me. I was emotional the entire day but had to bury my emotions and care for my patients. I wished so much I could leave and be there for him and his family one last time. I am so deeply sorry and saddened for the loss of Matt. Those 3 days showed me how wonderful of a person he was. Kathy, he adored you and cared so much for you! When you weren't in the room he would ask for you and always asked how you were doing. You were talking to the doctors outside once and he asked if you were crying, Paul and I could see he didn't want you to be sad or afraid. That is love. Know that he is no longer dealing with the pains or suffering he was experiencing. I hate his passing but I also hated seeing him struggling and fighting to live. He was immensely tough, and fought hard.
You were the perfect pair, I could see your struggle but you never really displayed it in front of him. You were only there to love him, make him happy, and make him cooperate with me! (I just needed him to lay still for a blood pressure! Haha)
I never really knew why my assignment was changed, but perhaps it was for the better. In no way would I have been able to compose myself while watching your family lose this beautiful and compassionate person.
Thank you for letting me in your lives and care for such an amazing person. I hope to never forget the memories I have of yall and of Matt.

Love and sympathy,
Gabby, RN

Garrett and Garrett. I know you as well as your family have heavy hearts that are finding it difficult to smile right now. That's okay!! Allow yourself this time, gather your strength and peace as days go by, by remembering his laugh, his helpful loving hand, and his warm full heart. Go forward in peace knowing that Matt is at peace and fishing on the biggest lake he has ever seen.
