Senior Cpl. Norman Smith

Norman Smith Obituary

Senior Cpl. Norman Smith, 46, died Tuesday while on duty as a Dallas Police Department gang unit officer.
Chief David Kunkle and fellow gang unit members eulogized Senior Cpl. Smith, a former Marine, as a gentle giant who was as comfortable in an antique shop as he was on the street, chasing criminals.
Chief Kunkle called Senior Cpl. Smith a hard-charging warrior who also approached people with respect, grace and dignity.
Officers from virtually every law enforcement agency in North Texas joined Dallas police at the funeral, including Fort Worth, Tarrant County, D/FW Airport, Dallas Independent School District, Mansfield, North Richland Hills, Keller, Bedford and Grapevine, to name a few.
Some came from as far away as San Antonio, Austin, Longview and College Station.
A group of Marines in dress blue uniforms attended, as well as a group of high school students.

I never had the pleaseure of meeting Senior Corporal Norman S. Smith, but am amazed at the character and authenticity of this fine officer.

In his honor, let's embrace the young people of our city by motivating them to become decent, law abiding citizens that Officer Smith would be proud of.

To his wife Regina and family; Give thanks to God for the time shared with this man of noble character. I know you will miss him, but God will fill the void in your lives. I am praying and will continue to pray for your comfort and strength.

Crossing the Bar

Sunset and evening star,
And one clear call for me!
And may there be no moaning of the bar,
When I put out to sea,

But such a tide as moving seems asleep,
Too full for sound and foam,
When that which drew from out the boundless deep
Turns again home.

Twilight and evening bell,
And after that the dark!
And may there be no sadness of farewell,
When I embark;

For tho' from out our bourne of Time and Place
The flood may bear me far,
I hope to see my Pilot face to face
When I have crost the bar.

To my dearest family, some things I'd like to say...
but first of all, to let you know, that I arrived okay.
I'm writing this from heaven. Here I dwell with God above.
Here, there's no more tears of sadness; here is just eternal love.

Please do not be unhappy just because I'm out of sight.
Remember that I'm with you every morning, noon and night.
That day I had to leave you when my life on earth was through,
God picked me up and hugged me and He said, "I welcome you."

It's good to have you back again; you were missed while you were gone.
As for your dearest family, they'll be here later on.
I need you here badly; you're part of my plan.
There's so much that we have to do, to help our mortal man.

God gave me a list of things, that he wished for me to do.
And foremost on the list, was to watch and care for you.
And when you lie in bed at night, the day's chores put to flight.
God and I are closest to you....in the middle of the night.

When you think of my life on earth, and all those loving years
because you are only human, they are bound to bring you tears.
But do not be afraid to cry; it does relieve the pain.
Remember there would be no flowers, unless there was some rain.

I wish that I could tell you all that God has planned.
But if I were to tell you, you wouldn't understand.
But one thing is for certain, though my life on earth is o'er.
I'm closer to you now, than I ever was before.

There are many rocky roads ahead of you and many hills to climb;
but together we can do it by taking one day at a time.
It was always my philosophy and I'd like it for you too...
that as you give unto the world, the world will give to you.

If you can help somebody who's in sorrow and pain,
then you can say to God at night......"My day was not in vain."
And now I am contented....that my life has been worthwhile,
knowing as I passed along the way, I made somebody smile.

So if you meet somebody who is sad and feeling low,
just lend a hand to pick him up, as on your way you go.
When you're walking down the street, and you've got me on your mind;
I'm walking in your footsteps only half a step behind.

And when it's time for you to go.... from that body to be free,
remember you're not going.....you're coming here to me.

I am so very saddened by this lost for the side of good. I know that God has someone else, probably someone even directly touched by Norman, to step up to the plate in this great fight for right. My husband and my son are both Dallas County Sheriffs and as I have followed this story I cannot even begin to process the loss you must feel. But, this is what they do, right . We certainly never want to get this call. After 30 years of marriage, my love for my husband has grown over the years - it is different, stronger, coupled with that is my respect for his commitment to this chosen field and the place it holds in his heart. If he loves it, I love it for him. What better than to leave here having done something you truly feel passionate about. We appreciate Norman, all of his fellow officers, as well as your sacrifice for us and our safety. My prayers...

I did not know Cpl. Norman Smith, but it is with a heavy heart that I extend my condolences to his family, friends, and fellow officers. Police Officer's Prayer to St. Michael

Saint Michael, heaven's glorious commissioner of police,
who once so neatly and successfully cleared God's premises
of all its undesirables, look with kindly and professional
eyes on your earthly force.

Give us cool heads, stout hearts, and uncanny flair for
investigation and wise judgement.

Make us the terror of burglars, the friend of children and
law-abiding citizens, kind to strangers, polite to bores,
strict with law-breakers and impervious to temptations.

You know, Saint Michael, from your own experiences
with the devil that the police officer's lot on earth is not
always a happy one; but your sense of duty that so
pleased God, your hard knocks that so surprised the
devil, and your angelic self-control give us inspiration.

And when we lay down our night sticks, enroll us in your
heavenly force, where we will be as proud to guard the
throne of God as we have been to guard the city of all
the people. Amen.
