Opal Patterson Obituary

Opal Evelyn Patterson passed away Sunday, July 6, 2014, at the age of 90 at a local nursing home surrounded by her loving family. Funeral: 2 p.m. Friday at Worth Baptist Church in Fort Worth. Interment: Emerald Hills Memorial Park. Visitation: 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Emerald Hills Funeral Home. Memorials: Memorial tributes will be equally divided between the Mount Abarim Baptist Translators, led by her grandson, Dr. Bill Patterson, and the Chilpancingo Mexican Ministry, led by her grandson, the Rev. Nathan Patterson. These gifts may be made through Worth Baptist Church or Mount Abarim Baptist Mission International. Opal was born Oct. 1, 1923, in Fort Worth. She was a wonderful mother, grandmother and friend to many. Her parents, Paul and Sarah Elder, were prominent in Texas businesses, including the early oil industry in West Texas and a thriving Fort Worth trucking business. Opal was a precocious child and graduated from Polytechnic High School with honors at age 16. She served as a bookkeeper for Montgomery Ward for many years. In 1941, she married the love of her life, Harold Hayden Patterson, who was called to serve in the Army during World War II. As an Army wife, she followed Harold when possible. Their firstborn, the late Robert Paul Patterson, was delivered in Fort Sill, Okla., where Harold, was teaching in the Officers Candidate School. He later served in the European theater helping to defeat Hitler. Opal worked while caring for little Bobby. Their second son, Dr. William "Mike" Patterson, was born in Fort Worth after the war in 1948. As a young lady, Opal received Christ as her personal Savior at Allen Avenue Baptist Church. She was a longtime faithful member of Rolling Hills Baptist Church, First Baptist Church and later Worth Baptist Church of Fort Worth. Over the years she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, was a class secretary and loved her church. She was honored as Mother of the Year by the congregation of Worth Baptist Church in 2004. Opal was preceded in death by her loving husband, Harold, in 1988; her son, Bob, in 2005; and all eight of her beloved siblings. Survivors: Son, Mike and wife, Becky; daughter-in-law, Evelyn; grandchildren, Russell Patterson, Damara Poledna, the Rev. Nathan Patterson, Andrea Sangjun, Sarah Patterson, Dr. Bill Patterson, Robert D. Patterson, Rebecca Joy Gibson, Jennifer Patterson and Allison Anderson; 20 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

I wish I could turn back time to the moments I sat in Opal's kitchen in Kennedale as a distant grand-nephew,
in the days when her happiness lit up the world.
Even now, from the other side of the planet,
I can still remember how precious she and her sister (my grandmother Gladys) both were in this world.
I was merely a child back then,
but her impression on me was,
even to this day fifty-odd years later,
unforgettable.

What a wonderful woman! We were so happy to be her adopted grandchildren. Even in so much pain she always had a happy thing to say, an encouraging word and her mind was keen. What a wonderful legacy to leave behind. Thank you for sharing her with us.

Mrs. Opal was such a sweet lady. She always had a smile and was a joy to be around. May the family be comforted in knowing they will see her again in heaven. What a family reunion that will be! We were blessed that we had the pleasure to know her and her family.

I only knew Opal a short time as she was the roommate to my sweet mom at Trail Lake Nursing Home until my moms death in October. Opal and I had many many great talks every day. She loved The Lord so much and it showed. She always had a kind word. I came to love her very much. I know she is happy to be with her loved ones in heaven. Her family was so special to her and the ones I got to meet were so kind. You are all in my thoughts and prayers.

Mrs. Patterson was always a kind and considerate lady and neighbor of many summers ago who was more than able to keep two sons in line.

My grandmother Nellie Sims and Opal's Mother were sisters. My Mother Inis Sims Kahler and Opal were first cousins. My grandmother passed away before I was born, but I remember Aunt Sarah and Uncle Paul and most of their children as a child going there to visit with my parents. Even have some photos. My Mother kept up with them and kept me up since I married a man in the military and were stationed many places ending up in Mineral Wells, TX. My Mother went to meet Jesus in 1996 and she has so many loved ones she is with now. You will miss Opal as I have missed so many of my loved ones, but we have God who sent his Son Jesus and I believe we will all meet again. Have some photos of some family gatherings at Aunt Sarah's and Uncle Paul's house taken when my Aunt Helen (my Mother's sister) and her family would come to Texas for a visit. Opal is in some of them. My prayers are for you and your loss. Wanda Kahler Rusher
