Robert Daugherty Obituary

Robert Ray "Bob" Daugherty, 85, was called to be with our Lord on Tuesday morning, Oct. 16, 2012. Visitation: 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday at White's Funeral Home, 130 Houston Ave., Weatherford. Bob was born in Abernathy on May 17, 1927, to Jessie Martin and W.D. Daugherty. He was an Aledo resident for over 60 years. Bob spent his childhood in Weatherford. His father left his family when Bob was 5 years old. He quit school when he was in the fifth grade due to dire financial circumstances. As a child he went from house to house seeking work and sometimes made money singing in traveling shows that came through town. At age 17, Bob enlisted in the United States Navy and served in the Pacific theater in World War II. While in the Navy, Bob earned his GED. When he left the Navy, he continued his education at Weatherford Junior College and later earned his bachelor's degree from Texas Wesleyan College. While at Weatherford College, he met and married Guylene Lasater. They raised two children in Aledo, Robert Guy and Martha Dawn. In spite of the fact that he did not have a father as a role model, Bob was a devoted husband, father and mentor to his children. His life role models were his father-in-law, Guy Lasater, and his brother, Dub Daugherty. Bob began his career working as an industrial electronics salesman. Later he was employed by SWIECO Inc. in Fort Worth and eventually became the owner of the company. Bob sold his business and retired to enjoy life on the farm with his wife, Guylene, in Aledo while establishing another business installing driveways. Bob enjoyed raising cattle, building barns and bridges, restoring antique cars and was an avid reader of historical nonfiction. Bob was the first Mayor of Aledo and served for five years. He lived his life with joy and loved Aledo, its residents and his many, many friends. We, his family, have been blessed to have him in our lives to love, to laugh and to celebrate God's gift of life and all its abundance. He was preceded in death by his mother, Jessie Martin Daugherty; father-in-law, Guy Lasater; mother-in-law, Lena Lasater; brother-in-law, James Lasater; brother, Dub Daugherty; and sister, Minna Lee Baker. Survivors: Wife, Guylene Daugherty of Aledo; son, Robert Guy Daugherty and wife, Laurie, of Millsap and grandson, William Daugherty; daughter, Martha Hansen and husband, Steve, of Aledo; sister-in-law, Martha Walker; brother-in-law, Jearl Walker of Fort Worth; sister-in-law, Mayola Lasater of Aledo; sister-in-law, Jenny Daugherty of Granbury; and sister, Wilma Fleming of Collinsville.

I worked for Bob at SWIECO, Inc. for 15 years and enjoyed a great friendship with him for 40 years. He had a good head for business. We spent many hours of conversation about a wide variety of subjects over the years. He had a broad knowledge base and could discuss just about anything in considerable detail. As did he and Guylene, my wife and I enjoyed Irish music and spent lots of special nights listening and dancing to the music of their favorite band, the Irish Rogues. He had a great voice and was often invited to sing his favorite songs with the Rogues. I believe he liked just about everyone he met and never said anything bad about anybody. He and Guylene will always be in our thoughts whenever we hear Irish music.

I treasure so many wonderful memories when we were children. A favorite is our fathers stirring the Mulligan pot, singing cowboy songs and laughing out loud! Your father lit up every room he entered and never met a stranger.

So very sorry to hear of Bob's passing. One of our most fond memories remains a party in Aledo, that included some tasty chili, jalapeno cornbread, and Bob's rendition of 'Danny Boy'. He will be long remembered. Our best to the family during these sad times.

No words can take your sorrow or pain. My Thoughts and Prayers are with you. Although I did not know Bob very well, he was my grandmothers (Hazel Daugherty Bays) cousin.
