Sue Cox Obituary

SUE COX
September 6, 1935 - July 31, 2023
FORT WORTH, Texas - On, Monday, July 31, 2023, at the age of 87, Sue Cox, peacefully passed away at her home in Fort Worth, TX with her loving and devoted husband, James, by her side.
Sue was born in Fort Worth, Texas on September 6, 1935 to the late Adalyn and John Cherry. After graduating from Polytechnical High School in 1953, she attended Hardin Simmons University, in Abilene, Texas, where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. While attending HSU, Sue joined the social club, Cowgirls which lead to her being voted President of the club her senior year. Because of her involvement at HSU, Sue was selected to become a member of Who's Who of American Colleges, an honor she was extremely proud of. While at Hardin Simmons, she met James Cox, who would become the love of her life. After graduation, they were married on June 16, 1956 at Poly Baptist Church, in Fort Worth, Texas. This past June, they celebrated their 67th wedding anniversary.
One of Sue's passions was teaching. During her 35 year teaching career, she taught over 1,000 1st and 2nd graders. After retiring from the Fort Worth Independent School District, she returned to the classroom and tutored students at several FWISD elementary schools, teaching them the curriculum needed to succeed when taking the mandatory Texas Assessment of Academic Skills test.
Even though it wasn't always easy sitting in the stands during football games, Sue loved being a high school coach's wife. You would always find her in the football stadium cheering on the high school football teams James coached for; Mason High School, R. L. Paschal High School and Southwest High School. She became involved in the Texas High School Coaches' Wives Association and met many wonderful friends, who had similar situations that affected them in the same way. They formed a close comradery that would last a lifetime.
In 1971, Sue became involved with the Miss Texas Pageant after forming a friendship with the pageant's lead hostess, who was the mom of Kathy's best friend. In the beginning, Sue was a hostess during the week long competition; however, she soon found herself as the lead hostess and ultimately a Miss Texas director, a judge for local Texas pageants, a judge for other state pageants within the Miss America Organization and a traveling companion for the reigning Miss Texas.
Sue was a devout Christian and loved her church family at University Baptist Church. Until the COVID pandemic affected our world, James and she could be found at Sunday School and sitting in the congregation for the Church Service every Sunday morning. In earlier years, James, Sue and Kathy's lives revolved around UBC; Sunday Morning Service, Sunday School, Sunday Night Service, Wednesday Night Choir Practice, Wednesday Night Church Service, Wednesday Night Youth Group, Vacation Bible School, and Youth Camp. Even though they couldn't attend services during COVID, James and she would watch the service from their home; however, Sue always missed actually being inside of God's house.
Sue was a beautiful person inside and out. She had a way of lighting up any room she walked into. She cared deeply for people around her, but none more than the members of her small, but mighty, family. Throughout her 87 years on this earth, Sue impacted many lives with caring, kindness and compassion. She will be forever missed. Until We Meet Again!
Sue is survived by her loving husband, James Cox, daughter and her husband, Kathy and Michael Hood, oldest grandson and his wife, John and Skylar Mills, youngest grandson and his fiancé, Cameron Mills and Lauren Little, great grandchildren, Camden and Sawyer and many nieces and nephews.
Sue was preceded in death by her mom and dad, Adalyn and John Cherry, sister and her husband, Jean and Tom Coleman, grandparents, aunts, uncles and a niece.
Visitation will be held on Monday, August 7, 2023, 6:00pm – 8:00pm in the Sandburg Room at Mount Olivet. The funeral will be held on Tuesday, August 8, 2023, 2:00pm in the sanctuary at University Baptist Church, followed by a Burial Service at Mount Olivet Cemetery.

I read Sue´s obituary and it brought back memories of when I was in high school. Coach Cox asked me if I´d pick up Kathy after school and stay with her until Sue got home from school. I´m not sure I was a very good babysitter but Sue was always so gracious to me and never told me I needed to do a better job. I´m so sorry for your loss but rejoice that Sue´s with her Heavenly Father

Sue was a friend and classmate at Polytechnic High School. After we graduated, nine of us remained close friends and got together several times for mini-reunions. She was always happy, cheerful, and radiant with positive energy. I feel fortunate to have known her for so long. My love and sympathy to James, Kathy, and all the rest of Sue's family.
